Subspace vortexes in nebula
Hello,

This has been in my mind for a while, but I never thought to post about it until now. Subspace vortexes and nebulae do not go together well. It really looks weird. Often times ships are not rendered because they're too far away, but subspace vortexes are always rendered, and it is disconcerting to see random subspace vortexes without ships coming out of them. Shouldn't these be... blurred or muffled or something when they're obscured by nebula gas? How difficult would this be to implement?

Also, I am aware that past a certain distance in a nebula the engine does not render ships as they're "obscured by the nebula". I don't know if there's another alternative (and this is a minor point), but at times I get ships materializing out of nowhere as I approach them and it's... well, startling. Especially when a sun is in my field of view and suddenly a ship appears and blocks it out. Is it possible to have ships being slowly revealed or something, and how unreasonable is this request? Again, this is minor. The main point of this post is the first paragraph.

Thanks,
CommanderDJ

PS: Not sure whether this belongs in the FSU forum or this one, so if a mod sees it and it's in the wrong forum, it would be appreciated if you could bump it over.

It's the first paragraph I have a problem with :P!
I really liked the subsy show through :\ Thought it added atmosphere in that you're aware that things are going on beyond your sensor/visual range, but don't know what that is until you get there.

Re: Subspace vortexes in nebula
It does make some sense; a vortex would likely emit much more light than the ship coming through, and therefore be visible farther out.  The part normally obscurred by the ship should probably still appear darker though.

Re: Subspace vortexes in nebula
I think it looks kinda off because the light from the vortex doesn't get defused in the nebula. Like headlights in fog...

Re: Subspace vortexes in nebula
^ Exactly what he said. I get that vortexes should be visible from a greater distance, but they shouldn't be as crystal clear as they are two meters away.

Re: Subspace vortexes in nebula
diffusion in the context you guys want isn't ingame, nebulae 'graphics' don't work like real fog, they use cheap tricks and ugliness :<
