Okay, we don't have a General Discussion forum so this seemed to be the best place to put this.

What, in your opinion, is the best and the worst application of modern (withing the last 45-50 years or so)technology in everyday life. :D

I'm being serious, don't say the mass production of whoopee cushions or some other half-assed smart remark!:snipe:

My best three ...

1.  Television Remote Controls
2.  microwave ovens
3.  Automatic Flushing Toilets in Public Restrooms

My worst three...

1.  Remotes for everthing in the house(Why do you need a remote control for your microwave oven)
2.  Electronic Fuel Injection(if it ain't broke, don't fix it!)
3.  million-dollar Ink Pens(when a pencil works just fine, this just goes to show US Government usually =  , not stupid just dumb)
So as through a glass, and darkly
The age long strife I see
Where I fought in many guises,
Many names, but always me.

There are only 10 types of people in the world , those that understand binary and those that don't.

Best - Toilet, Computer, fridge

Worst - Things that connect to the net that aren'y computers (think AOLers are annoying? just you wait until these things take off), SMS text messaging (forcing people to type in bastardized english "u" "ne1" "c u l8r" because the keypads on phones aren't efficient enough for people to type properly has destroyed more minds than Scientology),  the hold button on telephones.

Best:
Most electronics leading to high-level logic applications (IE, computers)

DARWIN!! (the 2003 mission, that is, not the evolution guy), although HST comes damn close.

Nuclear Fission power (in 30 years everyone had better get used to running off these or have no power.  simple.)

Worst:
Nuclear Bombs.  Isn't it just so HUMAN to go and completely pervert what could have pushed us to Alpha Centauri by now?

WIPO, or should I say, the large corporate movement that wants to change, through controls on intellectual property, the entire world into a big police state.

"MacDonaldisation".  I was talking to a friend a few days ago and he said the first word his counsins' son said was "donalds".  I find that repulsive in a really depressing kind of way.  Its just the general trend towards a rubbish, plasticy kind of society and the decay of moral fibre that really gets me.  Whether its processed cheese, britney spears and Nsync or fast food bars, it seems to unversally piss people off but they still buy it.  WAKE UP, WORLD for crying out loud!

SMS Messaging is great, you just need a phone with smart typing (like mine).

Electronic Fuel Injection is also great. It lets you use less gas for the same distance and lets you turn on your car without any problems even if the temperature is -10C.
Probably away. Contact through email.

Best technologies: 3D modeling programs (well, obviously), a fission system so simple you really CAN build one from home supplies, the helicopter (I dunno, I just like helicopters. So much better than cars, planes, etc. I want one. A big, ugly gray one.)\

Worst technologies: Chatrooms/IRCs/ICQ. No need for an explanation there- if you don't know why these things are an abomination worse than the feared Pepsi commercial, you're likely part of the reason I hate them. The new, largely Microsoft-spawned demons of the internet such as Macros, enabling script kiddies to hit me without me even opening the email and popup ads to dance obscenely about my screen and conceal their close buttons. And the TV.

My fourth worst would be the car, and my fifth the telephone (though it made the internet possible, the Plastic Bastard jams my DSL line and enables annoying, stupid people to harass me all night long. In fact, rank the answering machine right above the phone, 'cause it means I don't have a good excuse for never returning calls except "I can't stand you, burn in hell." Which isn't too good for business deals.) After that, put genetically engineered viruses and all the other things that make us die horribly along those lines. At least they kill the stupid telephone people, too.

If you hate phone so much, make a Blotto-Box and electrocute every phone user in yer area.

They senda ****-load of electricity through the lines jumping the V to over 12, making all the phones ring. People pick the phones up and BAM!. Electroshock.

'S possible. My plan was more a passive effect one. I'd have to keep the answering machine, but it'd be worth it...

*goes to rewire answering machine*

You could make it emit the 'Brown Noise'. Or that frequency that makes you sick and dizzy.

WIPO are scumbags, along with Hilary Rosen, Jack Valenti and Michael Eisner. I swear never to buy anything that goes into the pockets of those bloodsucking leeches, ever. They would be happy to see the internet commons, a haven for free exchange of information and ideas turned into a content delivery system for couch potatoes.

Chatrooms/IRCs/ICQ

I agree with you to some extent there but there are some limmited uses that Icq and IRC have.
