Jurassic Park III's "Spinosaurus"
 :nervous:

Really. Just because it supposedly has that sail on its back doesn't mean it's agile enough to take down T-Rex.

For one, the fight was in a friggin' jungle. Doesn't the sail work more on intensely hot areas, such as deserts or something?

For two, I don't think Spino was designed for such fights. T-Rex is more fit for this, since it's designed to tackle ruthless herbivores such as Triceratops. Moreover, T-Rex had serrated, bone-crushing teeth, to take down actual dinosaurs its size (e.g. Edmontosaurus), while Spinosaurus had more pointy teeth, designed for gripping large fish.

Any ideas?

I think that's still being subject to debate.

I personally think that the JP guys were so surprised that Spino could actually grow to colossal sizes (look in wikipedia) so they put it in, and depicted it as a monster who could beat the previous bad guy.

Although I remember that they said it was because of Spino's sail or something.

Nah, I actually went to college with and took classes from the guy who was dino advisor on the Jurassic Park movies, and he was the one who got spino put in JP3. He had this unique cool fighting style for it based on the bones he'd dug up (I don't remember if he discovered it or not - might have?) and he was pissed they never used it.

He also thinks T Rex probably had feathers.

Spinosaurus couldn't beat a T-Rex with lasers mounted on it.

Hidden Raptor Crouching Pteradon? ;)

Seriously though, there does seem to be increasing evidence in fossils emerging from Asia, and particularly China that, in that area of the world at least, feathers were far more common on Dinosaurs than originally thought.

Re: Jurassic Park III's "Spinosaurus"
I'm yet to be convinced of feathers on the really large theropods, they're far more likely to have been gigantothermic, and so feathers would have been a disadvantage. Maybe a few for display around the head or whatever, but a broad, downy covering I doubt. I'm even less convinced of the "T-Rex as a scavenger" hypothesis. Healed tyrannosaur wounds have been found in multiple herbivore skeletons, and they had binocular vision. Conclusive, maybe not, but good enough IMO. Personally, although the scavenger theory is quite old, I reckon it probably only gained real acceptance as part of the general pussying down of the dinosaurs that occurred in the seventies and eighties, when palaeobiology started to take hold, and the (admittedly fancigful) ideas of earlier palaeontologists tarted getting tested scientifically. So many well established theories (like the idea that sauropods had to live in swamps to support their weight, and the general view of dinosaurs as slow, dull stupid monsters) were being overturned, that the idea of overturning T. Rex's place as a scary apex predator was an attractive one all of a sudden (BTW, if it and its relatives were scavengers, what was the apex predator of the late cretaceous?).

As for Spinosaurus, it was a big weird dinosaur that could never have beaten T. Rex because by the time T Rex rocked up, all the Spinosauruses were millions of years dead. :p

You do have to wonder about that one. Unless they think that pretty much all the large dinosaurs had no natural predators and T Rex and his ilk waited until they died of old age.

I don't doubt that T Rex scavenged, pretty much all predators will scavenge. It's easy meat. Proving that it only scavenged is a little harder.

Re: Jurassic Park III's "Spinosaurus"
Jurassic Park III fails because I wanted to see, at least once, actual well-armed people take on the dinosaurs. They had the Marines on the beach at the end and I wanted to see the raptors (used to our unarmed protagonists) charge and get whacked.
