While the predicted peak for the Brisbane River at 4am (AEST) tomorrow has been revised down from 5.5 metres to 5.2 metres, Ms Bligh warned the flooding would cripple the city with 20,000 to 30,000 people affected.

The river peaked at 5.45 metres in the devastating 1974 floods.

"Brisbane will go to sleep tonight and wake up to scenes that many of them have never seen anything like in their lives," Ms Bligh said.

"This is still a major event, the city is much bigger, much more populated and has many parts under flood that didn't even exist in 1974.

"We are still looking at an event which will cripple parts of our city."

Terrible, terrible stuff. And, unfortunately, it's not just Queensland - New South Wales has had flooding as well, and Victoria may get some too. Yesterday where I live, we actually got the SMS telling us to get out. Fortunately, our house wasn't affected, but other people in the area weren't so lucky. :( It's rather worrying, still, though - the future in any of the affected areas is still uncertain outside of the predictions.

To all the other Australian HLPers, I hope that if you're in one of the affected areas, or at risk at being affected, that you stay safe.

I'm right on the other side, but I have a cousin in brisbane, with his wife and their 2 week old baby. Keeping up with them on facebook and such, but it's still... well, it's one hell of an event. Death toll is being predicted to top 40 people. :(

What a weird country we live in, almost unbearable heat on one side and flooding on the other. Although I heard something about flooding in Carnarvon as well.

Yeah, Carnarvon got hit, but it was a totally different, unrelated system, and nowhere near as bad.

Scotland here, but I've got an aunt/uncle and step cousins down in Brisbane. They're alright, as far as personal safety goes, but property damage...

I've been reading about this on weather underground -- it's been a bad situation for quite a while after that typhoon came through.  Hope things settle down there soon.

Fortunately, my relatives live near Melbourne and are pretty much unaffected, but it's still been terrible for those affected, I hope things improve soon.

That flash-flood the other day was just ridiculous.  Looked like it was straight out of the 2004 tsunami footage.
