Researchers aim to resurrect mammoth in five years

Quote
TOKYO (AFP) – Japanese researchers will launch a project this year to resurrect the long-extinct mammoth by using cloning technology to bring the ancient pachyderm back to life in around five years time.

The researchers will try to revive the species by obtaining tissue this summer from the carcass of a mammoth preserved in a Russian research laboratory, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported.

"Preparations to realise this goal have been made," Akira Iritani, leader of the team and a professor emeritus of Kyoto University, told the mass-circulation daily.

Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.

Re: Researchers aim to resurrect mammoth in five years
I'm skeptic about this. Sure, whatever the outcome of this experiment, conclusions will be drawn and science will move forward, though I highly doubt the first attempt will be successful. Cloning sheep and "resurrecting" a mammoth like this are two different things.

If any nation other than Japan was doing this, I wouldn't be worried.  :P

As something with a biology several million years out of date with current bacteria, I wonder if there'll be a pool on how long before they all die of something ;)

They should probably clone more than one, just so that their genetic eggs aren't all in one basket.

They should clone a bunch and then make Mammoth Island and then give the mammoths rocket launchers

No no no.  They need to strap a pair of tank cannons onto each of them so we can have Mammoth Tanks.

Re: Researchers aim to resurrect mammoth in five years
This might actually be feasible since mammoths do have distant relatives still alive.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside
