In my own case I wouldn't, because I think of Facebook as a record keeper of interactions with people I know in real life.  Mixing that with people I've only known from the Internet feels very weird to me, so I wouldn't do it if I were in your situation (nothing against Turambar, it would just feel weird).  But again, that's my opinion and I can't recommend it because Your Mileage May Vary.

actually I've come to the conclusion that I talk to people on Facebook the same way I talk to people on IRC, just because the people that I talk to on Facebook are the ones that it's impractical to talk to in person.

You are justified in being mad, but don't hold on to that hatred, else you're just living in the past.  One of you has to lay down their 'weapons' (their past memories of fear and anger and blame) if there is to be peace -- otherwise you wind up with a perpetual mexican standoff and zero closure. If you still feel hatred (or fear), you are not ready yet, so keep your distance for a while, get time to repair yourself independently.  Make your tomorrow something you can look forward to.

True, but if you try to be 'just friends' too soon, a whole sea of bitterness and anger can end up all flooding out at once and ruin any chance of friendship. Better to be patient to the point where you feel you can cope with your own feelings towards the relationship.
