Homesick audio opinion/review
Just if you guys are interested, here are my thoughts about Blaise Russel's Homesick, the balance of gameplay and story and storytelling in general. (Sorry for the bad audio)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyWPb8_MNQs - Part 1: spoilerless, mostly about the gameplay
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_ImEWPSSVM - Part 2: with spoilers, going through the story

Hope you find it entertaining.

I really did, but if the story would have been less engaging or the writing less good, I would've definitely dropped it ~10 missions in.

I love Homesick. Granted, it's been several years since I played it, but IIRC the gameplay was a little lackluster. But it didn't matter! For me most of the fun came from just seeing so much weird **** out in uncharted space. It was like a Freespace creepypasta. :D

The gameplay isn't great, but it's still an exceptional campaign because the story is so engaging.  The same is true of Sync and particularly Transcend, but along with Homesick they make up 3 of my favourite 4 campaigns.  The other would be Derelict, which combines a gripping story with varied and epic gameplay, to an extent that no other campaign I've played does.  Homesick should be required playing for anyone thinking of making a campaign.

Have you played Shrouding the Light?

I'd say Homesick has more to teach and is more accessible as a learning tool that Shrouding the Light. Blaise got a lot better and more skilled with StL, sure, but a new campaign maker is rarely ever going to match that level of skill. A Homesick is a solid place to start.

As a FRED teaching tool, it probably is easier to access (you're the expert). As a campaign, I think it fits Kie99's "niche" possibly even more and it is definitely a better campaign gameplay-wise. But again, I gave Homesick 4.5/5 on my scale. :)

I was actually wondering if any of them were inspired by the other, actually.

Transcend is one of my favorite FreeSpace campaigns ever. Sync I thought was pretty flawed by comparison, but still good.

Re: Homesick audio opinion/review
Transcend was more polished and a neater package, but Sync has so much more intriguing bizarre stuff surrounding it I think. Maybe I just like it so much because it isn't complete and all the mysteries left over are so... mysterious. Like how the scariest monster is the one you never see. Granted it's been 5+ years since I played either one...
