Re: democratic reform protests hitting... China?
China will be the last to fall. Unless Iran has already gone I don't want to hear about it.

EDIT: To explain my point: the Chinese Army, which is a quite frankly huge ****ing institution (so huge that China can't even begin to modernize it as that would be far too expensive), exists solely as an organ of state repression. The Army has won no wars for China, served no expeditionary roles, and probably can't beat any of China's neighbors (Vietnam already beat them up once during the 80s). It exists solely to protect The State from the people and there is zero evidence that it will not perform that task successfully for the foreseeable future.

Re: democratic reform protests hitting... China?
Hey everyone. I believe the call in China is the same one that is rippling through the Middle East.

From an e-mail I sent to a friend;

"In China today, they attempted to stamp out a call for a "Jasmine Revolution";
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110220/ap_on_re_as/as_china_jasmine_revolution

On a U.S. based Chinese advocacy site (http://www.boxun.com/), I found a quote that, even roughly translated, said that the term Jasmine had been blocked in search engines.

However, going to Youtube and typing, without the quotes, "Jasmine Revolution", the first hits I've seen were for "Jasmine Revolution Tunisia". Interesting. Clicking that links to several videos, including one where a rather over-dramatic individual with no credentials leads credence into the idea of a multi-national movement."

Upon looking up Jasmine on Wikipedia, I also found that it is the national flower of Tunisia.

EDIT: Ah bugger, looks like the NYT got it after I did -_-

I don't see China as having the same problems as many of the middle eastern countries. The Chinese leadership has wisely grown the middle class and some people are becoming quite prosperous. From what I understand the employment situation is mixed but not totally depressed.

I doubt a revolution is what will happen there.... But all throughout the middle east... high unemployment and poor economic conditions are definitely helping to provide that breeding ground for some significant and sometimes violent change.

I was not implying that it was going to do any good, just that what has been spreading in the Mideast has effected china at all.

High unemployment and poor economic conditions makes me think of Wisconsin, where they've got protests 70,000 people long for the government attempting to strip unions of bargaining rights.

I too doubt the possibility of revolution considering the cultural mind-set of Chinese. There might be several small reforms if this keeps going I think. The Chinese government really loves stability.

Re: democratic reform protests hitting... China?
well, given that the government is doing everything in it's considerable power to make sure that people within it's borders don't hear about this, that is understandable. have you heard much about any of the recent stuff from North Africa / Mideast? looks like gaddafi might get deposed next.

Re: democratic reform protests hitting... China?
Huh. Seems like it's not so much pro-democracy reform protests as random troublemakers trying to start a little commotion. :doubt:

I don't see that. It's labeled everywhere as people wanting democracy; the protesters themselves have said that.

Well the BBC isn't blocked but they don't seem to be carrying the Chinese story much. Egypt is a much bigger story of course. That stuff was on the front page of China Daily.
