I was looking at the mods because i wanted one that would simply update the graphics and add more missions. But all im seeing are movie remakes and why would i want that when the only reason i play freespace i because i love freespace. Not star trek or battlestar galactica. So which mod should i use?

Check out the MediaVPs and FSPort. Those are FS2 and FS1 remakes, respectively. That'll be in the Freespace Upgrade Project forum.

Also, don't expect any, except maybe a new mission in FSPort in these. They are designed to be purely graphical updates.

Install FreeSpace Open using the FSO Installer, directly into your FS2 directory.

The graphical enhancements are mediavps_3612, and it'll also install a bunch of mods that'll give you a ton of new missions in the FreeSpace universe (Derelict, Transcend, Blue Planet, FSPort, Silent Threat Reborn, so on).

i got the media VPs but they dont do anything when i select them in the launcher and run the game. looks exactly the same

Then you fail somehow. Please do this. It'll tell us how.
