cut scenes in freespace 2

hi! I'm gonna start playing freespace 2 for the first time. I have fixed it so I play with the latest graphic mod, no probs there. but I have read on this forum that you have to have a movies folder in freespace2\data\ to see the games cut scenes. but I don't have the movies folder and I installed the game with the original discs (not gog). I wont start playing the game if I will lose out on those movies. is there a way for me to verify that I have all the movie files in the rigt place?

For starters, playing through and seeing if you hit the first cutscene as you're supposed to. The second being searching through all the game data and see if you can find the cutscene files at all.

You have to download the OGG cutscene pack and put them into your main FS2 folder.
If there's a file named "FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp" in your main FS2 folder, then you should have cutscenes. If it's not there, you won't have them.
There are 10 movies, all in .ogg format.
A best way to find if they're working is to check if you're getting FS2 intro upon startup (starts with a blue nebula, then camera pans to the Battle of Deneb).

then the videos plays from the second cd in vanilla installation, right? can't I copy them to \data\movies\ folder?

edit: I have no intro and I have no FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp in FS2 folder. but I was wondering don't you get the movies in a vanilla installation?

edit2: okey! downloaded fs2_ogg.zip. and in in there was 10 .ogg files (the movies) but no FS2OGGcutscenepack.vp. so now what?

Cutscene pack is needed, because original cutscenes are in MVE format, which is not supported due to licensing issues.
These cutscenes had been converted to .ogg format, which is supported by FS2_Open and packed into the cutscene pack FS2_Open can play.
You don't need CDs and in fact, FS2_Open can't play cutscenes from them.

okey! I got that now, thx. but I still have the issue of where to put the movie files I downloaded? (ten ogg files)

Ah, you've got them separately.
If so, put them into mediavps_3612/data/movies .
This should work, if it doesn't, look for the "FS2 OGG Cutscene pack" and put it into your main FS2 folder, or mediavps_3612 folder (the former works for me, the latter may be more recommended).

thanks all :)  problem solved. and I must say, this must be the best forum I have ever stumbled upon.

No, the original cutscene files will still work just fine, as the .mve player code was put back into the engine a few years back.  If you're looking to save a bit of space, though, the .ogg cutscenes are the better option. :)

Incorrect, FSO is still able to load content from the CD/DVD if it is in the drive at game startup.  Unfortunately, I do not know which retail disk the movies are on because I have the GoG version of FSO.

As noted by Mongoose, FSO has support for .MVE moves (the retail format) since 3.6.10.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think the cutscenes were split across disks 2 and 3.  I seem to remember those being the only ones I ever had to put in the drive while playing.

FS2 has 10 cutscenes. In retail, they have the file extension ".mve". Or ".MVE". If you have those, put them into \freespace2\data\movies\ . If that directory doesn't exist, CREATE IT.

You'll know you've done it correctly when you see the Battle of Deneb cutscene as soon as you start the game. :)

If you get to the pilot select screen, you haven't.
