Why don't you put the FS1 stuff in the mediavps?
I wonder why you don't put all the freespace 1 stuff like upgraded models and textures and weapon effects into the mediavps? This would probably make a lot of things easier for the FSU team (and, perhaps, campaign makers). In particular I am thinking about that weapon pierce effect for example. If all the stuff is in one upgrade pack, then you could do it all at a stroke and perhaps avoid redundancy.

It's just an idea.

There would be a problem with tables not finding their ships that they're attached to.
Effects could be included, but a couple of important things changed between the games and thus, separate VPs are needed.
Also, it makes normal Mediavps download smaller, speeding things up for those who don't play FSPort.

Re: Why don't you put the FS1 stuff in the mediavps?
There are many reasons why we don't do this. Many of the ships have different stats is one reason. Someone like Goober or Zacam can better explain the issues.

However, we are working out a better solution for the future.

Also, it would require the FSPort to be debugged first.
People are stupid, therefore anything popular is at best suspicious.

Re: Why don't you put the FS1 stuff in the mediavps?
FSPort itself has been fairly bug-free for a long time... The FSPort-Mvps though were not doing so great...

Rest assured that we have spent a large amount of time remedying that issue. I have personally squashed a very large number of those bugs.

This is another shameless post preparing you all to drop the "FSPort is buggy as heck" prejudice because after our next release it should be very, very smooth.  :D

Oh, I am not talking about gameplay related stuff. The fsport would still have its own weapons.tbl and ships.tbl with the particular tech entries and stats like hitpoints and so on. I just thought that it would be a good idea to have a common effects-wep.tbm and all the _tech.pofs and weapon effects and so on in one mod.

I can't see where these things would create errors. In my mod, for example, I removed all the Dogfight weapons and several ships (the Orion#Bastion and the Hades, for example) and there are no problems although they are referred to by several mediavp modular tables.

That's a good point, though I wouldn't be surprised if most of fs_open users also used the Port.
