you know you can make good renders with Ts if you know how to use it, that's the problem

(at least that's the problem here :D)

As ryx said, do the tutorials. If they don't make any sense for you, well, dunno, try knitting, it might fit your skills more :p
Anyway, you won't make renders with Gmax, it's not its purpose, and the renderer has been removed.

If you really have mad skillz, you should be able to make that stuff in Paint. :D

Seriously, I think any program is capable of making good stuff if the user is talented; main differences are the interface systems which are a matter of preference.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. you know, they can't be useing default shaders, and there has to be some sort of volumetric plugin un use,
and those are some DETAILED models, geometry of such wonderus complecity it brings a tear to my eye, :)  :(

Truespace 4 and 5 have volumetrics built in. TS4 added a proper shader interface and TS5 improved upon it. Its still not a very good shader interface, but at least its reasonably extensible.
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

You act like they're mutually exclusive.:p

Yes, TS is bad. You can still do cool stuff with it, but like CP said, it's possible to do amazing things in Paint as well. The question is how easily it does it, how well it ports stuff, what its texturing engine, etc. can do... things like that. Not irreplaceable, but they make life a hell of a lot easier. Compare Photoshop and Paint- I've seen crap done in Photoshop, and great stuff done in the little pixel-pusher programs, but I'd take photoshop any day, even if it is blitheringly complicated on the advanced levels.

IIRC you have to enable it for each light, as well as in the rendering options.... erm... what the heck is that thing that shows up when you right-click on the render button?!

Oh, yeah - Palette! :D ;)

(in ts4) it's the render controle, lets you enable the render quality, the antialiasing level background/forgournd and toggles for raytraceing (reflaections) and raycasting (transparency)
