That's pretty stupid. They were pretty gauche but not, to a casual examination, across the line.

Man, the British police department seems to be awful at determining appropriate levels of action.

To me, the numbers they brought to a call like that with people who react like that to being arrested, is an example of this.

It's all to preserve our freedoms from the evil terrorists. :P
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

To be honest with you, I think it's an example of people being bad at being bad.

Even with that overwhelming force and aggressive advantage being displayed, the people were civil - even loudly joking on the part of the arrested.

Man, this article on Yahoo.com (the American version of Yahoo! News):

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110428/ap_on_re_eu/eu_britain_royal_wedding_security

Makes that arrest sound a lot more threatening than it was.

Quote
Scotland Yard said officers detained three individuals in south London Thursday evening on suspicion of conspiracy to cause public nuisance and breach of the peace. The suspects — two men, aged 68 and 45, and a 60-year old woman — remain in custody at a local police station, the Metropolitan Police said.
The police declined to give further details, saying it believed those arrested were planning to attend the royal wedding and that 19 other arrests not specifically related to the event were made in London earlier in the day.

Also, what do they mean "Declined to give further details"? What about all the stuff said in the other article? That one even had a video of the arrest online?

Well it looks like this guy may have been involved in inciting violence in the past. If he was planning on doing that again the police acted properly. If not, then this could be an over reaction.

I don't see how someone like him could be involved in inciting any violence that would actually be a threat. Other than yelling really loud, what is he going to do, throw his dentures at you?

Honestly, I think those crazy GWhatever protesters generally deserve what they get, given that even they don't ever seem to know what it is they're actually protesting. :p

Are you really trying to claim that cause someone is old they can't cause trouble?

Cause I can't see what else you are trying to say but the idea that someone old can't incite trouble with their words is so fantastically stupid that I know you must mean something else.

"Knight was sacked by the University of East London in 2009 over claims he incited violence at the G20 protests."

And the Met announced a couple of weeks ago that they were taking a zero tolerance stance on trouble for the wedding, anyway they don't have to actually charge them with anything to prevent the action because they can be held for 48 hours without charge here so a simple hold and release will suffice for this one.

You know, in spite of everything, at least the situation seemed to be resolved rather peacefully (disregarding the outcome). If it were here, there would have been a brawl the moment the old guy said "This is ridiculous!".

I wish we had those kind of policemen.

I doubt it. I think the cops in the US are jumpier, but they also have to deal with a lot of people who are allowed to own a lot of guns. Think about it how it is here compared to in the UK? It's not even that bad here, but the fear factor is so ramped up that it seems worse than it is to many people, I bet.

Re: Three arrested in the UK for planning a protest
Strange case, though I'm quick to think that it was used as an example; They don't want the british protesting the whole PR marriage that's going on. And as for G20, I keep hearing reports of agents provocateurs, which makes me doubt if all the mass arrests during such events were actually of violent protesters. Nonetheless, i'm glad it was resolved peacefully.

Oh, sorry. Usually when I hear people say that, the US is what they're referring to.

What do you mean?

Re: Three arrested in the UK for planning a protest
Well, the royal wedding, as i see it, has been a big hyped PR event, meant to make the royals more popular, while they are not in high regards with most people. In order to make it seem everyone likes the royals, all forms of protest have been made illegal according to the news.
