"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Re: Read Quick! (Details inside!) AKA May 21, 2011.
That's easy lol. One day, someone's gonna make a prediction for the sole sake of taking advantage of people. It'll be widely publicized, and no one will believe him. Since he's doing it to take advantage of folks, he won't believe it either, and then bam! It'll happen. Then, everyone will be surprised! Lol. My solution is to just live every day with the kind of imperative that a looming end carries. In truth, no one is promised tomorrow. If the belief in a looming apocalypse should cause a Christian to change their behavior, they seriously need to ask themselves why.
Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made
Were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade
To write the love of God above, would drain the ocean dry
Nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky!

I'm not a total denier of faith, I just hate the way most of it is being institutionalised. I'd be happy if there was a God, but I have a problem with the very Human nature of trying to use that hope to control people. Whether He truly exists or not, God, and particularly Jesus could have been a great motivator for the improvement of mankind, teaching self-sacrifice and respect.

People often make the argument that Jesus said "I am a Sword", but I always think people mis-interpreted it, a sword can kill and threaten people, it can also protect and feed people, it all depends on the hand that wields it.

Looks like a lot of Christians are going to have to ask for forgiveness for lying again. :P

Re: Read Quick! (Details inside!) AKA May 21, 2011.
Well, I'm a Christian (light, not connected to a church and such) but I don't believe anything about any Rapture. It's typical arguements of people that are too scared to stand up for their faith and just say, oh, we'll be teleported out before the mess starts. Bull. I never was taught the Rapture theology, that stuff is probably only 150 years old maximum. Same with the other crap like the constant reussal of 'Render unto Caesar'. And more recently, the Clergy Response Team, using earlier mentioned crap. That pastor guy that has his radio show? He's very likely one of them. These guys are no Christians, they're fearmongerers, and got money to make. At least we won't see those snake oil salesmen in the next life. =P

So it's crap, obviously. I don't care too much about it nonetheless, got a future to build, work to do.

Pretty much my stance.

 I, also, get a vision of Jesus sitting in heaven with a diary crossing off dates....

I sometimes get the idea that the Rapture is actually a cull. :p Think about it. It would wipe out only the people who are certain they actually will be taken up into heaven. That wouldn't be most good Christians. Most of them would have a doubt that maybe they weren't good enough, forgiving enough etc. That maybe they didn't let Jesus into their hearts enough.

It would get rid of the people who actually think they're morally superior to everyone else. Twats like the guy who started this rumour, leaving the rest of us on a planet which would probably be much better off without them. :p

Most of them would have a doubt that maybe they weren't good enough, forgiving enough etc. That maybe they didn't let Jesus into their hearts enough.

That, of course, is presuming that it depends on us - how good we are, etc. Thankfully, it doesn't - it depends on Him. :) For an example, look at the covenant God made with Abram in Genesis 15. Traditionally, both parties of such a covenant would meet each other in the middle of the halved animal pieces. In this instance, however, God placed a deep sleep on Abram, leaving God the only one to pass between the pieces - a sign that it was a unilateral covenant from God to Abram, and that it wasn't dependent on Abram keeping his side of things to be maintained.

What was this whole unilateral covenant about? Gen. 15:18-21 states clearly that it is about the land of Israel - something another unilateral event planned to occur in September is directly is opposition to. Intersting times, for sure. :D

Oh, and back on-topic... I'm still here. :D

One passage that teaches about the rapture is 1 Thessalonians 4. Verses 16-17 say: "16For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord."

Re: Read Quick! (Details inside!) AKA May 21, 2011.
It's been an absolutely lovely day here (though we could actually do with rain), it's ironic really, because so many people seem to be slathering at the mouth for it all to end. Oddly though, I don't hate them, I pity them.

I could almost understand this mentality in countries that are torn by wars, famine and death, but the US is a land of plenty, it may not be perfect, but nowhere is, and a lot of the West do not realise how lucky they are. The thing that annoys me is peoples willingness to put the future of themselves and everyone around them in the hands of some unseen force, we have such potential as a species, we really do. I suppose it takes great courage and humility to say "We are responsible for the world around us", but until we do so, the mistakes of the past will forever return to haunt us.

It's just plain hot here, and we could deal with a good bit of rain too. Going into summer in the south with dry soil is not a good thing at all.
