severe sound issues
hi there,

after having downloaded everything needed to go blast some ships, I now have the problem that ingame voice and weapon sounds are not played at all or they just start at some point, leaving me flying in complete silence for several seconds...very anoying when a foe sends some missile^^

i´m currently using the onboard sound realtek 97 cause i´m not able to find a driver for my SB (the disc is...somewhere... d-oh)

since everything else outside the game sounds ok, i wonder what i can do to get this fixed?

i do however remember having this "bug" on another build of FSU/FSO/FSP some years (yeah years^^) ago and never found any solution

i hope someone might help me with this

cheers

Please post a debug log, that'll help us get an idea of what's going on.

Re: severe sound issues
how do i do that? run it with the "d" .exe?

Re: severe sound issues
Yes - follow the instructions in the FAQ at the top of the Support board.

Re: severe sound issues
ok, i didn´t really find that FAQ, but i just ran the game with the debug .exe and attached the log-file

i hope this is correct?

Re: severe sound issues
all the same, tried that before posting in the first place...mission briefings play also correct if that might be of interest

edit: just realized that creative labs is not the hardware that should be used as sound device (hence no driver installed)?! strange...i´ll deactivate it and give it another try ;)

aah well nope, i guess i got confused with that... anyways, after a reboot and again setting it to software after having deactivated that "unknown sound device" (the soundblaster without drivers) it seems to work as it should.

Thanks for your help and patience

Re: severe sound issues

It's just listing "Creative" as the vendor for the OpenAL sound sub-system that FSO is using, not as the Vendor for your Audio drivers.

Re: severe sound issues
You should be able to find a driver from Creative's site for your SoundBlaster card. :nervous:

Re: severe sound issues

Realtek is not a creative product. Drivers for those are usually handled by the motherboard vendors site or driver CD that comes with it.

Though, if the above individual say, had two sound devices (one on-board and one add-in) then windows should be able to handle having both installed.

FSO would just need to be told which one to load through (preferably through "Generic Software on X" where X is the sound device being used)

Was referring to Creative as a place to get the drivers for the SB card, as the above suggests the reason for not using the SB card is not having drivers for it.

And yeah, technically Windows is capable of dealing with multiple audio devices, but in practice some software causes issues with it. The worst case of multiple audio hardware incompatibility I have encountered would have to be with Rome: Total War which goes absolutely bananas if you try to use a discrete sound card while having onboard audio enabled on bios.

What kind of SB do you have?

I think the quintessential issue here isn't whether or not there are multiple sound cards or not.

What I think happened was, he saw the log mention Realtek AND Creative, but didn't correlate the "Creative" as only belonging to the OpenAL.

But unless and until the OP returns and clarifies matters, we won't know for sure. But I'm going to go out on a limb and say that there is no SB Card.

Reason I was asking is if it's a SB Live! or Audigy, Audigy 2 (among a few others, basically, any SB based off of EMU10k1 and EMU10k2 chips can use The kx Project drivers.. works on XP, Vista, and 7 32 and 64-bit editions.

no no no NO NO NO! not for use with FSO, OpenAL is unsupported with them, and they dont make sure that it works for hardware acceleration.

Configuring them is another pain and on itself, but once you got it done properly, its a nice experience. Much better than for example mucking about with alsa in the linux world.

For Hardware OpenAL support in FSO, use ONLY official Creative Labs drivers. No others. Trust me.

Well, if you would like to point me to official OEM CreativeTM Vista/7 SB Live! drivers, be my guest...

FYI, there aren't any.  Creative told its users to go suck it and buy new equipment.

Wrong?

(If i could direct-link it, i would. Anyhow..)

Select Audigy, select your exact model, download "Creative Sound Blaster Audigy series driver 2.18.0017 "

I have these for my Audigy 2 ZS on Win7 x64 working perfectly with a very temperamental card.
