when they do something unethical/underhanded/evil, then we can start to talk thus-far there have been few instances where I have had reason to mistrust them. they are in-line with my ideology, there business is structured around it, this is why I like google, not because I'm unfamiliar with other search engines, not because I just never question them, but because I actually like them and all that they do. if you don't want opposing views, why should you have them forced upon you, why would you even want that? no, what this guy is getting at is that google allows you to get what ever you want, it allows you to find support for climate change denial, for refutation of evolution, for UFO cults, it allows you to live in an echo chamber if yo so desire, if you want to be immersed in that stuff it will come just as easily as if you were looking for the opposite. his problem is that you are 'wrong' and should be 'challenged', that to say his problem is that 'someone is wrong on the Internet and they must be stopped!' obviously it should be academia that choses what the priority should be, oh look at that he's a professor, imagine that, "the Internet doesn't agree with me therefore it cannot be trusted". he never said the solution was a plurality of search engines.
That's an obfuscation; you know that is obviously not the point he was making. Honestly it was even a bad example; you can connect anything to nazism if you try hard enough.
no, that was exactly the point he was trying to make, he flat out compared google street view with the Deutsche Volksliste. he Godwined himself in the most classical scene, and he absolutely no need to do so, which is why it's so silly.
That lots of centralized knowledge that is primarily controlled by a for-monetary-profit entity could possibly be a danger for people's interests that may not necessarily fall in line with making things more profitable?
Google owns none of the knowledge that they index, they only index it, if google were tomorrow taken over by the Sith and only returned nyancat for all search terms it would not effect the content of the Internet in the slightest, all your bookmarks would still be present, the wikipedia would still be were it has always been, you would still be involved in online communities where people would bring to your attention any new interesting development in the online world independently of Google.
