More than likely you also didn't use them properly. I used to think earplugs didn't work at all for me, but then I discovered how to use them properly:
1. Roll one tightly between two fingers.
2. Hold open your ear with the opposite hand reaching over your head while you quickly stuff it in.
3. Hold it in with your finger for at least 30 seconds, or however long it takes to fully expand.
4. Repeat for the other ear.
They shouldn't be sticking out very far from the ear canal, and certainly not beyond the outer ear. When used correctly, earplugs are suitable ear protection for firearm use; the quietest unsurpressed gunshot is 140 dB, while loud rock concerts are 120 dB (~100 times quieter). Take them along to save your hearing. Those big walls of speakers in front are so they can project the sound back to you almost at full blast; not being in the front row is usually actually little protection at a rock concert, though it does help.
