Recommendations for a great set of cans
Looking for some input for a decent set of headphones. I do some moderate gaming but usually nothing online so I don't need something with a fancy mic or whatnot.  I spend most my time on the computer listening to FLAC music and watching movies.  I recently put an Asus Xonar Essence STX into my system so I'm looking for a good set of cans to go with that.

I almost bought Sennheiser HD 595's but they are open-backed which means they don't cut down on ambient noise.  I'm looking for something that will take advantage of a killer sound card without breaking the bank too bad but also blocks out ambient noise (closed-back, not noise cancelling).

Thoughts?

Re: Recommendations for a great set of cans

They have aged a bit, but I still like my Sony MDR-V700. They've weathered indoor/outdoor commuting on public transit and held up for over 2 years now.

The only complaint/issue I had with them, I fixed myself by converting that long arsed connector with a right angle plug from switch-tech.

Good high and mid range, with a really nice low frequency response.

Well in relative seriousness, you should look at Beyerdynamic DT-770's. I'm personally more of an open-can type of guy but closed-can has its merits. :p You may yet want a headphone amp though to provide full power to whatever cans you decide on.

The Essence STX has a amp in it that powers headphones with up to 600 impedance.  I've heard it really nice even at high volumes with almost no distortion so I'll probably skip the amp but thanks, I'll look into those headphones you mentioned as well as the Sony.

Lol, true.  I typically stay away from the forums, but the product review pages are pretty good.

They can be. I've used the mass-review lists to get an idea about good IEMs mostly. Head Direct RE0's supposedly sound awesome and Soundmagic PL50's are supposedly ridiculously comfortable.
