The latest Red Faction games just haven't been all that spectacular.

Aside from GeoMod and FS references, was there anything interesting about these games?

Now they can go make FreeSpace 3.

Except it's not, and hasn't been since shortly after I got here.

Hell, we've got a hilarious parody campaign that actually calls itself 'Freespace 3' and it hasn't been utterly incinerated for having that name.

Red Faction Guerrilla and Armageddon didn't actually play bad, but I guess they didn't bring enough new stuff to the table. :blah:

Might have something to do with the fact the demo was nothing more than a tech demo of 20 ways to explode things and put it back together.
It felt like a thin gimmick to hold what should have been a game together.

Maybe Volitions 'secret project Y' will open doors for a new and promising franchise.

I personally liked Armageddon and Guerrilla. They were really quite fun to play

Too bad though

Re: Red Faction Canned by THQ
It is rather sad to see RF go like this, Guerrilla was and remains one of my favorite games of all time. I've spent hours dying of laughter from the incredibly random occurrences that happen as a result of the destructible open world and AI. However, I feel like Armageddon took all of what made Guerrilla so wonderful, most of all the open world, and threw it away for a "more mainstream" FPS formula.

Sad for this to happen, but after Armageddon, I have to agree with THQ that its better not to beat a dead horse.

One part of me wants this

The other part says it'll never happen

Then I remember who holds the rights and logic takes over...

Re: Red Faction Canned by THQ
Even if they really did a FS3... after all the awesomeness we ve had mod wise I feel Volition could hardly live up to the expectation.

Would propably end up being another "Duke Nukem Forever" style desaster, possibly with rushed production and lackluster "modernized" gameplay ... certainly designed for the console market, mainstream audience and an XBox360 controller, bleigh.

At this point I am frankly hoping they won't ever make that sequel. ;)

The funny part is that there has hardly been any mainstream game in the last decade that I was looking forward to quite as much as I am looking forward to... WoD2, Blue Planet: WiH2, Wing Commander Saga, Diaspora, et cetera.

Mainstream gaming has become a bit stale and is lacking imagination imho. Mods and indie games is pretty much where innovation and truly good gameplay are at these days.

Re: Red Faction Canned by THQ
Agreed.. I find some of the mods here just as fun if not more fun then 'modern' titles. However, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jacked for Battlefield 3 and Dark Souls.

As to whether or not Volition would botch an FS3 horribly. Possible. I have great faith in them to do a good job though. For many of them, this game is their baby. They'll do their damnedest. Also, I don't see why it would be rushed. Besides the Hard Light Community's rabid desire for it to be released, no one else would really be demanding it. There would have to be a LOT of marketing to get people amped, i.e. no reason to rush.

As for the licensing issue, that is a much bigger hurdle. Allthough I found something interesting. Not being at all familiar with the terminology around this stuff, I shall post links and ask you guys to inform me BUT, it looks interesting.

The first is a link to the Freespace IP, still held by interplay. The second is a link to Descent Freespace the Great War IP, which says something about the patent being dead, cancelled as of September 3rd 2010. Does this mean the DFSGW licence is open?
