so, I want to edit the missile flare that shows up behind it... I open the file to see a black square 512x512 DDS image, now I remember I spoke once with Dabrain about this, and from what I recall its a game with the mipmaps, so that up close it fades, and when it gets further away from you it fades in(mipmaps kick in).
my question is, do people even want different colored and looking flares?
and the more important question is, how do I edit mipmaps?

  • The sky is the limit.
Mipmaps show up as layers in GIMP.
Updated flares would be awesome (and I requested a deep blue one from you ages ago :)).

I'd like seeing different flare types. :D

Does this mipmaps trick work with other sprites?  Cause I see a huge potential for all sorts of light effects with this.

I'm having a bit of a problem editing the flares... I duplicated the pof model of the trebuchet missile, gave it a new name hydra.pof, and assigned the missile in weapons.tbl to use that pof.
all seems good, but no matter how big I set the glow point to be, it simply won't change in-game, i tried crazy big ones as well, like radius 30, I also know the normal for it should be 0, 0, -1 for it to show up when viewed when looking at it from the front, but again, this also doesn't work.
any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong? is it possible it only renders the thruster and not the glow points?

also, looking at helios.pof, I don't see any information regarding glowpoints...

*scratch all I said, my test bombers were firing the wrong type of missiles... testing shall commence, next post I'll release some new flares for missiles in different colors :)

been playing around with flares on missiles and engines, I have a few questions:
1. I know setting the normal to 0,0,0 will make the glow be visible from all directions, and setting it to 0,0,-1 will only be visible from the back, is it possible to widen the angle so you can see it a bit from the sides?
2. why do we need the mipmap trick? IMO its a neat effect that the missile slightly blinds you(the flare that is) just as you fire it...
and lastly I'll post a feature request as the glows act a bit funny, especially on engines...
