Gamers helping the fight against AIDS
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/09/19/gamers_crack_structure_of_aids_protein_in_three_weeks/

The short version is some people playing a game called Foldit, which is... well, from what I understand, a protein folding game, managed to make a model of a protein in the virus that causes AIDS (I thought this was simply HIV?  I'm honestly too lazy to really research into it) that was accurate enough for researchers to "refine" and shortly after determine its structure.

I was somewhat surprised not to see it here since this seems to be the place I go when I want a weird news story.
21:20:19   SpardaSon21: "hey baby, want to get a good look at my AC/20?
21:20:26   Spoon: I'd hit it like the fist of steiner

Some people are like Slinkies.  They aren't really good or even useful for anything but they always manage to put a little smile on your face when you give them enough of a push down the stairs.
