Re: Shall I install W7 in 32 or 64 bit ?
Starcraft can behave in Win7 if you download the latest version from Battlenet. There is a weird DirectDraw compatibility problem in Win7 which is causing it. The smae problem that is plagueing the Wing COmmander Kilrathi Saga games (the first two).

Highly recommend you install the 64 bit - I get the feeling the 32 bit version is only offered for older hardware...

sc1 works fine in game, its just the interface screens have some color corruption.

Just use a .bat that kills explorer.exe while starting SC at the same time. Makes alt tabbing a bit of a pain but it fixes the color issue.

Unlike XP, 7 doesn't like it very much when explorer dies. Symptoms I've come across after killing explorer in some way include explorer copy not working correctly untill after reboot. I don't use explorer copy myself, but it is something to keep in mind.

Don't even know what an Explorer Copy is. >_>

Anyway it works fine for me on 64 bit. Just go with 64, you're not gonna be missing too much.

you'd be hard pressed to get legacy applications to run in 32 bit mode at this point without a nostalgia rig or emulator. microsoft cant be expected to maintain compatibility with an os that is 5 generations out of date.

The Bottom Line: If you want to run games older than I am, then you need to partition your HDD and install Windows 95/98.

Nope.

You'll be hard pressed to even find a single bloody driver for the old os.

your best bet is to pull machines out of dumpsters till you find one with a working win98 install.

Or you could just install VMware or VirtualBox and install DOS/95/98/whatever there since they both have support for OSs that old... I'm sure even crappy VM drivers are enough for 16-bit games.

No - you should find a computer that is older then you are.

Plenty of them are still 'round though.

Man, why, oh why haven't I upgraded to W7 earlier ? It's not the windows that I care, but **** is this DX11 amazing  :eek2:

In installed my MassEffect 2 again, and I'm thrilled about the new visual effekt. I had already maximum effekt enabled at my old XP, but now each texture has a structure, i have real smoke, awesome reflections and so on. You can even see a realistic textile wave on the illusive mans cloth's..... This new graphic is so great  :pimp:

^ummm..... I'm almost 100% sure that Mass Effect 2 runs in DX9 exclusively. So there should be absolutely no visual difference.

Do you really think ? I have a giant difference in visual effects and texture sharpness, and as said, I had the max values set also in xp. Something was unlocked from switching to W7

Yes, ME2 is a DX9 game, with no special DX10/11 coding. But it may be that the drivers you're using now do make a difference, given that they aren't crippled (like the XP drivers are).

i tend to avoid games that use dx. opengl games just have much better reverse compatibility with the api.

depends on the gpu and its age mostly tho. and the version of the drivers as well... -.-

but yes, i personally remember no bleepin difference in ME 1 or 2 or any other game between xp and vista/7...

hell, i honestly couldnt tell the difference between crysis in eith- scratch that. it ran ten times as slow under DX10 :p

Re: Shall I install W7 in 32 or 64 bit ?
Look, if you have a DX10-optimized card, like a 5k series Radeon, and you're only using a driver that understands DX9 (like, for example, any driver available for XP), then your card is definitely crippled.
