How to get textures to show up in Max
Hey guys, this maybe a dumb question, but i have exported the Hecate to a collada file to get it to work in 3DS max 2012, but when load up the hecate it is a black model, how do i get the textures to show up or will i have manually re-apply the textures?

Nice. I recommend learning the software before you spend several thousand dollars buying it.

Buuuut, it's pretty obvious what's going on here.. First up, I recommend using Blender. It's free, legal and pretty darned good. 3ds Max 2012 is going to be overkill if you don't even know how to work with materials and textures.

Now, as to your question. You need to open the material editor, select the material that is applied to the Hecate, and find the diffuse. Go in and point 3ds Max to the file location of the texture itself. You'll probably need to rip it out of the MediaVPs. Also, I'm pretty sure the Hecate is tilemapped, so you'll have to do this for several diffuse textures. Then you also need to go in and apply the shine, glow, and normal for each one as well.

Cheers but i have to use 3ds max 2012 for my uni course i do know a wee bit about texturing UVmapping i just wasn't sure about when you import stuff that isn't done in 3ds max, i also don't rem seeing any materials applied but i will have another look. Also 3DS max 2012 full edition is free for students. You just submit your student details to autodesk and they give you everything you need to get a full working copy, with a years licence, or how ever long your at uni.

Two things: first, please tell me you're not a native english speaker. Secondly, if you're doing this for a course, than perhaps it will be covered in said course's textbook or lecture notes?

i'll give you an answer to the second part. No. 90% of the time, no.

Unless you specifically ask for the general procedure, **** no.

Working with textures and materials was in my textbooks... it's also on Google...

I'll be looking for that student copy watermark on any renders, because I can be an ass like that.

First of I'm Scottish, yes i realise i made a few grammar mistakes, but i was very tired when i posted that post.

Second. Unless its in the course notes then our tutor won't tell us, unless we ask for it, also we haven't been given any text books whats so ever. We just make notes on whatever he is showing us. All we have been shown in class is the basics of modelling, the very basics of uvmapping, haven't been taught what half the buttons are for in the uvmap editor. I am slowly learning what the other functions do in max by myself. The only other thing is that when i show some of these tutorials to my tutor, he says they are doing them wrong or the lazy way way.
