corrupt files? [solved] (FS Port Crashing at random)
Hmm, I'm a bit confused right now:

I installed FS Open, tested it and it worked, installed Freespace Port including the mediavps (3612), tested it and it worked (, too). So after playing a bit, at some point the game crashed (breefing room/tech room). As far as I understand the FAQ, my files are corrupt, and deactivating the mediavps -> running FS Port *basic*, fixes the problem. However, I deleted the folder and unzipped it, tried it again, didn't work. So okay download file got somehow corrupted..? and that after I checked that it actualy worked... hmm okay. So I downloaded it again, still crashing, okay diffrent mirror, still crashing, hmm.

Well I also tried deactivating all the features and diffrent releases, still the same problem. I catched the debug report, which afaik tells me that the file is corrupt. Is that really the case and if so might it be the server files too? Or is it just me beeing unlucky 0o.

Well the only other thing that comes to my mind is that the FS2 mediavps (not the fsport files) might be the corrupt ones, well if by chance fsport is using them for any kind of reason.

However, I have 2 Inferno builds, the basic and the one with SS2, the strange thing is, with the SS2 it didn't crash, atleast with the debugger, I have to give that some more testing.

I okay i think i know what happend, the files must have been corrupted at some point, I fixed it, but in order to *play it save* i went from the SS2 Inferno Build to the standard non Inferno build, mixing up the Pilot data resulting in a crash (aka, using a FS2 Pilot in FS1 camaping).

Hmm, nevermind that, its starting to crash again, and I made shire its the right pilot/exe combo. I'll try deleting/replacing the media/core files, i got a hunch that the files might become corrupt if you crash the game. But basically what happens now is that i try to continue my campaign, it starts loading the briefing files, gets stuck on the first one (warp.pof) and then the screen goes white and the game crashes. Yes I'm patient and waiting for the game to load, not touching stuff but it goes white anyway. Techroom, I hear sound but screen goes black so it must be something with the files?!

Edit:

First note, switching from fsport-mediavps to basic fsport doesn't solve it, game keeps crashing on campaign load up.  ** mission load ** is all i can read, here is the log from it, too.

I'll first reinstall FS2 test it and if that does not help I'll reinstall all the FS open/port files as well.

Reinstalled FS2, no change, turned off all features, no change. Starting with the FS open files now.

Okay, I basically replaced every file of the game except the launcher (and its config), even tried a new Pilot to make sure there is no mistake. No change, still crash on campaign/techroom. I really got no idear what it is. For some reason the game seems to work fine and than gives me this kinda crap. That why I though I might have confused the pilots/release data. strange  :wtf:

Maybe its my computer/driver/anykind of program that is effecting the game.

Windows 7 SP1 (but UAC is turned off)

no overclocking what so ever.

restart does not help, hmm. I'm definitely out of ideas now, got any clue?

Since I was considering other sources then the game itself as a cause for the problem, it came to my mind that may be the catalyst control center -> driver forced AA/AF might collide with the game, at least that's the only thing I change on a daily basis.

So I changed it to application setting and launched it, selected my brand new created pilot, trying to start the campaigned crash. But when is selected my in progress pilot it worked. So I wanted to check out the first pilot again, went to the tech room crash, wanted to see if my old pilot would work again, crash.  :banghead:

I really got no clue at all why it seems to work at random and also stops working at random, too. Just can't figure out what the cause might be, very strange  :wtf:.

*just* deactivated the media -> back to basic, it runs with my old pilot once more. I'm not sure how stable this is so I'm gonna use the chance and play a bit  :lol: .

the debug log suggests to me it's trying to load the fs2 weapons and stuff in port and dying because of that, but more than that, I'm not really good at reading these logs, hopefully E or somebody will be able to shed a little more light on it, I'd just say be patient.
Dunno what timezone you're in but most of the people who do tech support will either be asleep or at work right now.

Well, my first suggestion would be to get one of the 3.6.14 RC builds and try that.

Thanks for the help and no I'm not on a timer just curios about the problem. I tried the RC2 3.6.14 SS2 builds and at least for now it seems to run, tested it 2 times in a row. However, since the problem has a bit of a randomness this *might* only be luck. I'll keep testing and will report back any trouble.

TBH, It should be compatible with 3.6.12. However, in the release post you are referring to, in the Installation Instructions section, it mentions that something newer than 3.6.12 is highly recommended.

It could be a problem with file locations.  There have been problems with the long file sequence that can show up as a random crash problem.  This seems to come up with the GOG installation

I would recommend installing everything to something like E:\games\Freespace 2

I'll give it a try.

And it runs again just fine, I'll report back when it crashes again ;).

Note this might be a common issue but I wanted to mention that with the .14 build the graphics seem to get *stuck* when I press ESC in a mission or try to skip training, it does not crash however the mouspointer gets lost and in the end I have to crash the game. I know its just a RC build and I can live with this kind of obstacle, just wanted to mention it.
