Transferring the domain, if I'm understanding sandwich correctly, has nothing to do with adding/moving HLP to it, it's a matter of telling the current registar to point the DNS entries for the domain to the new IP's...  well, after the VPS has the HLP stuff copied over to it and is configured to deal with the potentially new filesystem layout.

I think you're talking here about keeping GoDaddy as the registrar and hosting the DNS zones on the VPS?  (please tell me if I'm wrong!)  I didn't think this is what we were talking about doing - i.e. stop GoDaddy being our registrar because we don't trust them ;)

Oh, I understand that part just fine (I'm looking at moving mine from them as well), I was just commenting that it sounded like there was the impression that moving a site to another host required transferring the domain to another registrar, which it doesn't.:)

POSIX is fine, as is Rev or RP

Well the thing is we're also using CloudFare (CloudFire? CloudF-somethign) for our DNS, so I'm just not quite sure how to prepare the DH side of things. :) I'll take it up with He Who Set Up CloudFare/Fire/F-something. :p

...err, Rev, was that you I gave access to the GoDaddy account? :nervous: #badmemoryat33isbad

For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. As of late, I think it's cloud-f'in-are more than anything, but meh. :P

Nope, was not I.  But to get rid of it should only be a matter of changing the DNS entries at the registar level, be that godaddy or whoever.  Mail, I don't know what was changed for that at the moment.

It was me, Sandwich.

And rev_posix is right, our pointing to CloudFlare occurs because GoDaddy currently points the DNS data to CloudFlare.

If we changed Registrars, I'd rather it point to either the Registrars DNS or OpenDNS, since as it stands, CloudFlare is going to get turned off soon anyway.

I haven't done it yet, because I don't want us to have double-down time in turning off CloudFlare, and then again if/when we change registrars. If we don't change, then great, I can just point it back and turn CloudFlare off. If we do change, then that will handle it for us anyway.

Ok, well you have a much better handle on this than I do. I've got no problem with transferring the domain to my Dreamhost account; just tell me what NS/MX records I need to have in place beforehand. :)

MX Records would be whatever the Google mail setup defines as needed for Google.com and Googlemail.com.

NS for OpenDNS would be: 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 I believe. Easily Google-able.

Here's the current MX records for hard-light.net, you should be able to just duplicate these?

Code: [Select]
$ host -t MX hard-light.net
hard-light.net mail is handled by 1 aspmx.l.google.com.
hard-light.net mail is handled by 5 alt1.aspmx.l.google.com.
hard-light.net mail is handled by 5 alt2.aspmx.l.google.com.
hard-light.net mail is handled by 10 aspmx2.googlemail.com.
hard-light.net mail is handled by 10 aspmx3.googlemail.com.
