HLP DNS registration

Given recent events with SOPA and GoDaddy, wouldn't it be a good idea to move to another registrar? Stories like this do not make me comfortable.

agreed. i'm in the process if moving my studio business from them too.

LOL. I loved the end of that article. Apparently, lost profits are more important to GoDaddy than the "principles" upon which they stood in support of this BS legislation.

Probably not. hard-light.net is still locked which means it will probably take a bit to get it transferred (especially with GoDaddy's past behaviour on the transferring out of domains).

Although I've not used them personally, I've heard good things about these guys  (although they're obviously not the absolute cheapest you could find).

I use http://baremetal.com/ and I haven't had any problems with them.  Even though they are a Canadian (Vancouver Based) registrar they can do billing in USD for people out side of Canada.

They are also not the cheapest, though they seem to be cheaper than the one that niffiwan posted.

And I'm getting old - I have a Dreamhost VPS that I can add the HLP domain to. Just not quite sure how to go about it.

On the record, they did. But they are still written into the bill as exempt, and most likely still support for it behind the scenes.

So it seems they have finally done it officially, but either way godaddy is an underhanded registrar where they own the domain, take down domains whenever someone asks, and play tricks on people registering a domain.

Transferring the domain, if I'm understanding sandwich correctly, has nothing to do with adding/moving HLP to it, it's a matter of telling the current registar to point the DNS entries for the domain to the new IP's...  well, after the VPS has the HLP stuff copied over to it and is configured to deal with the potentially new filesystem layout.

Huh?

I was only talking about the domain, hard-light.net which has GoDaddy.com as a registrar, this needs what we want to transfer. Is the physical server that HLP is hosted on also a GoDaddy server?

Sandwich - are you talking about this? http://dreamhost.com/domains/

i.e. you already have a VPS and are entitled to have a free domain with it?  If so, I think you just click on the "transfer domain" link.  In my experience, you also need the domain "PIN" or "registry key" in order to prove that you have the right to transfer the domain, you should be able to find this in the GoDaddy administration page for the domain... actually, this basic procedure is true regardless of which registrar you move the domain to.

I think you're talking here about keeping GoDaddy as the registrar and hosting the DNS zones on the VPS?  (please tell me if I'm wrong!)  I didn't think this is what we were talking about doing - i.e. stop GoDaddy being our registrar because we don't trust them ;)
