Stumbled upon Kelly Snapka's Freespace 2 page where he's done a tiny bit of a writeup on the stuff he contributed. Of note is confirmation that the Hippocrates was indeed meant to echo the Nebulon B, and that the light textures on the Ganymede actually served a sensible purpose.

Funny you should say that... It took some deciphering but myself and some people on IRC worked over the manufacturing logos from the Colossus cutscene and intel_GTVA.ani (for my remake of the ANI). It didn't take long to realize that most were references to staff which we were able to pick out from the credits.tbl from retail.

Here's the logo remakes.. Come to think of it, I should put these on the Wiki.

There, I whipped up logos for the few canon companies that didn't have canon logos and put everything on the Wiki as PNGs with transparent backgrounds. Enjoy.

It looks like one of the Hubble Space Telescope images of the Eagle Nebula that gets used/imitated as standard space-background filler a lot in ninties-era stuff. I'm pretty sure it was used in the space combat opening bits of Babylon 5, season 4, episode 6, Into the Fire, among other things.
