One day people will get bored of call of duty, and other fps games... and space flight sims will be the supreme game genra again. At least i hope.
If that day comes, i expect freespace to be on the list, if not at the top.  :hopping:

you know real time strategy is the real enemy of space sims. starcraft nearly signed the death warrant for descent and freespace.

Yeah.....no.

RTS games and Space sims have little to no overlap, even if they sometimes use similar settings. The reason why FPS's have taken the crown of the gaming market and run away with it, to me, has more to do with the way that FPS engines make much more exciting technology showcases than space sim engines. It takes a lot more skill to create a believable FPS world than the comparatively empty emptiness of space.

Also, ever since games went "bro", the only franchises that can get a mass-market appeal are the ones that, on some level, can satisfy the wish-fulfillment fantasies of the mass market. Unfortunately, a lot more people want to be super soldiers that are able to pwn n00bs than there are people who want to be strapped into fighters to shoot plasma into other fighters.

I think saying that the popularity of any given genre precludes another genre from being successful is rather silly.

All we need is to cram like 15 more buttons on the xbox 720 controller and the time will be ripe for a new space fighter sim.

I always thought it was the necessity of a joystick that killed space sims. You need to rope in the casual gamers to stay afloat.

Yes, I agree with this statement.

Not gonna happen.

On-rail and arcade-style shooters will succeed the FPS genre.

Umm..... Halo Reach?

The casuals these days are using 2 joysticks.  Seen a current gen controller lately?

And you would think that with all this practice CoD has in these past many, many years... they'd of finally been able to accomplish said task!

I think that, Freespace will become a MORE popular game one day. Once people get tired of mindlessly killing other people in video games, they may look to some thing else. Something with a story. Something that has feeling to it, like freespace. When people look for different games (people will) The opportunity will present itself, and we WILL be ready. For now, lets keep improving, lets work and make the Freespace games, better than its creators :v: ever imagined... Lets get ready.

Would that really be neccesary though? Wing Commander could be played with a joystick with two buttons. Controllers these days have two sticks and 12 or so buttons.

Simple enough, i'd geuss. And voice commands are on the rise.

I tried mapping FS2 to a 360 gamepad.  It didn't work too well, not nearly enough buttons for targeting and energy management.

Believable in terms of graphics. I am not commenting on the weird US-right-wing-wank fantasies these games call a "plot".

joysticks never went away, and neither did the space sims. if you really look hard enough you can find both. there was a period joysticks kinda went backwards though. when usb made the gameport obsolete. because of the complexity of the usb bus the joysticks now needed their own brains (before this many joysticks were just pots, buttons, and wiring), so every joystick now needed a microcontroller. many of these mcus had 8 bit analog adcs, giving joysticks an 8 bit resolution. but some gameport joysticks (sidewinder) gave you 10, and many used the adcs on your sound card and gave you 16 bit resolution. these days you really need to get something semi high end just to reclaim that ancient glory. these days 10-bit is touted as a high end feature. also they used this as an excuse to up the price. "this is usb its better so you have to pay more". should point out that you can get a decent microcontroller with usb support for around 2 bucks, and thats not the bulk rate either. the cost of a good joystick is quite ridiculous and thats kind of why people avoid getting them.

right now the biggest threat to joysticks is micro$oft pushing the rather limited xinput (which only supports functions found in a stock xbox controller) over the far superior, but old and neglected direct input. im getting sick of buying pc games that support xbox360 controllers but not pc joysticks. for people who own top shelf joysticks, xinput is nothing but trouble. the real irony is that microsoft used make some of the best joysticks around. the one controller fits all mentality they seem to have is rather atrocious. im sure eventually they will pull their heads out of their ass and switch to an api that is actually better than whats currently available (and make it reverse compatible in the process).
I can no longer sit back and allow communist infiltration, communist indoctrination, communist subversion, and the international communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

Frankly... I don't think us veterans would like the space sims those people would make, if the genre became popular again.
