Karl, Magic and all others who have been putting time into this, great job!

I know I have talked, mostly in the past, to some of you. Have you guys thought about tackling this with a bigger team, new engine? I know there is a big desire to see the board game in a 3d environment.

And of course an updated Mechcommander game, based in the battletech universe. Anyway, figured I would see if you guys have talked about such things.

PhelanJKell,

So far I am the only programmer and a l do almost everything else...
Karl is doing a lot of work on 3d modeling and some other things, the few others are mostly inactive.

Modding released MC2 code was fun only in the beginning. As I went deeper It became a problem because its very old, overcomplicated, unfinished and had a lot of bugs. 90% of the time I put into this game went to tracing and debugging. The engine is directx7, unfinished and also very old.

There is a real life factor too, we have jobs, families.

I already have plans to write new logistics part of the game - a combination of MW2, MC1, MC2 and MW4.
It will definitely not go with this engine.

It would be nice to work in a bigger team. We had an SVN at the beginning, with two programmers who failed to even setup the game to compile... And they disappeared without good byes.

We are talking about the work from the beginning, a huge task. It will need dedicated people or the project will be doomed from the start.

?

Have you probed the community to see their response to a new project would be?

Judging by the response to MCO project, community interest is 0+. At the beginning some year or so ago, Starman and Karl had a campaign to draw people to MCO, very little response.

Maybe the people did not take us as serious project, maybe the situation is different now?

There was a contest in December at ModDB, MCO had incredible 3 votes!

I voted for MCO.

I will have programming classes sometime this year, so maybe I could help (just depends on what programming language this is in)?

I've also attempted to make models for Karl.

Maybe the problem is that MC2 is an old game, and not many people like old games. I, personally, like older games over new ones because these new games are more about shooting than strategy.

There's also talk about a new MechCommander game for the iPad/iPhone

There is a game being designed for the iOS, but it will not come to PC.

I think you could build a decent team with experienced individuals. Focus on the gameplay, details that make battletech/mechcommander so fun. The graphics do not have to be ubber high tech, actually I would go for more of this type of look:

http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/01/17/airmech-looks-ace-and-you-can-play-it-in-your-browser-right-now/

The one thing that many tabletop players enjoy is the logistics. Being able to choose your pilots, their skills increase. You buy mechs, equipment, repair etc etc etc...

I have some solid ideas, though I would want to sit down with a group to write them all down. Look at megamek. It isn't a paid project, and it something like a community mechcommander build handled in the same way would be awesome.
