Hey everybody, I intended to use the instructions found here to install Freespace:

However, it appears Crossover is only for newer Macs, and with a 10.4.11 I'm just a couple versions too old.  What program should I use in place of Crossover?  How can I get this to work?  Any advice would be appreciated!

I'd find someone with Windows, install it there, then just copy the Freespace folder onto a flash drive or something.  If that's not an option, you could try Darwine, though I haven't used that for anything more complicated than the ANI tools...

What launcher would work with power mac 10.4  (note this is for a friend)  or would it be better to update to snow leopard before installing freespace 2 I was going to use my windows installation. He has never heard of Freespace OMG. I will fix that.

10.4 users should get Soulstorm's launcher--see the manual install on mac thread:

Everyone else should use wxLauncher.

Support for the Power PC architecture was dropped after 10.5, so your friend won't actually be able to upgrade to Snow Leopard (if I read your post right).

If you have windows installed on an Intel Mac, FSO will probably run a little bit better through that (assuming you have proper drivers sorted out, etc).

 I would think I would have to since this game is pc based.  second how does the game run  in a power mac G4 since I have no clue as to the graphics hardware. etc. I would like prefer it to run like it does in windows, this might be asking to much.  I just want his first time with the game a great one. He might be better off getting a not to old PC to play this on.

According to Wikipedia, if you just set up the retail FS2 game with a Mac build of FSO and SKIP ALL THE OTHER THINGS, it may run. Or not.

Yes I found specs on apples website,  on a powerbook does it have the openal installed or do I need to do this? this was not on the spec sheet. I know it is installed on the intel's models.

I've run FSO (badly) on a G3 iBook from 2003.  I wouldn't expect much in the performance department, but you might get a decent framerate with just retail assets--you can always turn down the detail settings.  Stability is another issue, though.  Can't make any guarantees there, but good luck!

I decided that I will only install the main Freespace 2 open game alone with the FS1 port for his mac install. I believe that i have an idea of what files are needed but could you confirm the requirement's I searched for this but my search string must be wrong.  I am sure I should remove the windows exe files but what about the other files?

Err, the barebones setup included FS2 itself, proper FSO builds for the given operating system, OpenAL, and possibly a Launcher for the given operating system. You don't specifically need to remove the .exe files, since they won't be used under OS X unless the user specifically tries to open them. And even then they'll probably just give some funny error report and nothing more. You can remove them, of course. It just isn't required.

Than I was correct, This was really to save disk space his HDD is not that large in his G4 from what he told me.
