Rick Santorum on Euthenasia.
Basically the dude is making up claims..

It's frightening that these tactics apperently work... Although now it is getting a little bit personal due to my nationality, I am curious why "The Netherlands" was mentioned as an example, and not, say, France.

Because everyone knows the French wouldn't willingly accept death
They'd cower in fear, trying to form a jagged alliance with the cancer in order to gain a few more years

Though, on a sidenote, I don't see what's so wrong about euthanasia

Because if you start off with the premise that God owns everything in the universe (Deuteronomy 10:14) then humans must belong to god, combined with "though shalt not kill" (somewhere in Exodus) then killing a person, even if they want it is akin to stealing from God.

If you mean, why do actual Christian Right types not like it? Then its because they just don't, but a majority think that war is a'ight. (in the sense that being a soldier isn't a sin)

The issue with euthanasia is where does it stop and who has the authority to decide in cases where the subject is unable to communicate.  Like with anything else it is not always a clear cut decision and when dealing with taking a persons life a decision to be approached with caution.

Though the US state of Oregon and the Netherlands, to name two places where it is legal, have both done an admirable job of ensuring protection for the vulnerable while giving people the right to die with dignity.

I am not saying it's impossible just that it's an issue that has to be approached with caution.

Yeah, and they seem to be pretty solid.  They obviously put a lot of effort into making sure the laws were written well.  Where the laws are listed in the article, I really like that they have to decide themselves and insist multiple times.  The redundancy on doctors' opinions before the patient is euthenized is probably the best provision there.

The specific issue aside, Santorum spewing blatant lies doesn't surprise me in the least.  He had a really great line about climate change the other day.

Kill is not the correct translation.  Murder is.  Kill =/= Murder.  Thou shall not murder.

In which case Euthenasia is not murder. So there is no reason Christians should oppose it, right?

Statement of dubious correctness. This is a popular sentiment in some camps, admittedly, but the original phraseology is much more ambiguous than that.

why euthanize when you can impale?

I suppose you could argue that there are multiple definitions.   I would then argue that you need to take its use in context.  Obviously, if capital punishment and wars are mandated, and killing in defense of one's home is permitted, it doesn't mean "do not take life, period".  It means, do not murder.

But we digress...

It's frightening that these tactics apperently work... Although now it is getting a little bit personal due to my nationality, I am curious why "The Netherlands" was mentioned as an example, and not, say, France.

Because everyone knows this is what happens in countries where five year olds smoke pot on every street corner.

Damn it. Someone's going to fall for it. I know someone's going to fall for it. I know you too well HLP, you love your knee-jerk reactions SO much, that I just know someone is going to fall for the Poeslaw. Even if they see this post, it makes no difference. Oh well... :sigh:

That's actually what I really want to tell the guy if I ever meet him: No man! We are not into euthinazing people! We're too busy doing drugs to be bothered learning the procedure! :P.
