Audio problem under Windows 7
Since I've changed my system to Win7, I've been having a weird problem with the voice output in FSO. From time to time the sound stammers like a damaged CD where the laser can't cross a scratch. First I thought this is not a big issue and I can live with it but now it starts annoying me as it happens all the time.

Is this a known issue?

Re: Audio problem under Windows 7
I haven't heard of it.

Here's a few things we may need to know:

What kind of audio hardware are you using?
Are you using OpenAL or OpenAL Soft?
Which version of OpenAL are you using (Is mentioned in the FSO log)
Are the drivers for the audio hardware installed correctly?
If I'm just aching this can't go on

Re: Audio problem under Windows 7
OpenAL version is 1.1. Never heard of OpenAL Soft so I guess is the "normal" OAL.

The kind of audio hardware is a good question to ask. I cannot find any sound card in my hardware manager. I also cannot find my motherboard there. Is that usual? :nervous:

realtek alcsomethingsomethingsomething then most likely.

Which motherboard is it? Precise info on the manufacturer and model + google will tell you. or even its manual if you still have it.

You know one of the many useful bits of info that is a FSO debug log is the sound card that is being used, which is more important than whatever the manufacturer says is on the board.

So, SF-Junky, please generate and post a debug.log.

Re: Audio problem under Windows 7
from the mobo, its ALC892, well, yer screwed. try with openal soft, but dont expect wonders.

Download the zip, open it, in the win32 folder is the soft_oal.dll, punt it in the same folder where your executable is, run the launcher and try out the options. i'm not 100% sure which one is the actual proper one to use however, someone else will need to tell you that one.

So, SF-Junky, please generate and post a debug.log.
except, as the debug log shows, "Playback device: Generic Software on Lautsprecher (High Definition Audio-Gerät)"
which is about as useless as anything else in the regards of "which sound card is it"...

Okay, fair point.  However the lack of information is actually very telling even if you know what the actual device is.  Because it is using a generic device means that OpenALSoft is going to be an improvement (assuming he has sufficent CPU for the OALSoft card to work in.

to be fair on the other point, the realtek drivers arent that much better than the default windaz ones anyhow. bit more configurability in the speaker assignment front, but thats about it.

Re: Audio problem under Windows 7
I suppose, you could always get a cheap Sound Blaster and throw it in there.  Just be sure it's compatible with Windows Vista & 7, as Creative has a nasty habit of helpfully placing their products into artificial obsolescence.  (They don't support their product with drivers for OSes that came out after their product was released, forcing you to buy new hardware to use with newer OSes instead of using your perfectly functional, two or three year device that you paid good money for.)

old audigy's are always a good bet. audigy 2 zs i can personally vouch for as i've had very good experience with it while using creative's drivers.

Re: Audio problem under Windows 7
Asus sound cards are also pretty decent, and work with Windows 7. I have a Xonar DS, and the biggest issue I have with mine is having to switch back to the speakers manually after using the front headphone jack. Otherwise, it works fine.

I'm using an Audigy 2 ZS myself for many years now, works really good even under W7.

These cards just have one problem, which Creative doesn't care to fix.

If you have more than 4 GB or RAM, you will not be able to record your voice correctly, it only crackles. Somehow, the recorder seems to have problems with <4GB. If you limit it at start, the Audigy works well :)
However, this problem is ONLY for recording stuff, it works fine otherwise with 8GB

Re: Audio problem under Windows 7
I was never able to get my old Audigy 2 ZS to work under Win7 properly. It'd work fine for hours, days, maybe almost up to a week and then start having all sorts of audio playback issues. I gave it away and it's been working fine under WinXP ever since.

I got Asus Xonar D2X. Unfortunately Asus is not releasing driver updates very regularly, the last driver for Xonars is dated almost a year old now. There is at least one unofficial driver pack (UniXonar) for Xonars that has managed to fix some of the issues present in official Xonar drivers. So it very much seems like Asus has gone the same route as Creative. Produce top quality hardware but leave software and driver development hanging. It wouldn't be as bad if C-Media would have their reference drivers and control panel software freely available for download, but they don't.

Since both Creative and Asus have been disappointments and there really aren't any other widely available alternatives in the market, you're pretty much stuck with onboard audio. You just need to make sure you pick the right motherboard that has top of the line audio chip, for what that is worth. At least when you pick up a mobo that has Realtek chip on it, you're pretty well off when it comes to driver support and least amount of audio issues in games and whatnot.

i've used the onboard realtek for the mic personally, worked like a charm :p

the big problem with my card is that its very finicky when i put it into the slot. if i dont clean out both the slot and the card side plug, it wont work.

btw, fury, did you ever give the kX drivers a spin?
