Author Topic: steve-o's ships...  (Read 8444 times)

i am trying to track down the warships made by steve-o that are featured in blue planet. thus far i was able to locate the FBC Torrent known as the "UEC Sanctus" in blue planet http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.649

as well as the FTFg Tethis used as the "UEFg Narayana" in blue planet http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.651

but i'm still looking for the other ships he made. the UEFg Karuna and UED Solaris to be more specific.

i tried to extract them myself already from the blue planet vp's... however that didn't seem to work right :-/ i had either issues with parts of the ships missing because of missing maps, texture bugs where the nameplates should be... and last but not least a lot of weird error messages when i tried to launch the game because the table wasn't right... which i couldn't make heads or tails from :-/

i'd really appreciate if maybe some of you point me in the right direction... thanks :-)

Steve-O is currently reworking all his warships. Hyperion (Karuna), Vexor (Solaris) and Torrent are currently WiP. I don't know about the Tethis, but it might also be.
Besides, why not as the author himself? Steve-O doesn't post much, but responds to PMs from time to time.

Does that mean the versions in BP WiH update are not the final versions?

They are optimized, de-bugged, and generally improved versions of Steve-O's originals done by Esarai. They will remain as they are.

Steve-O is redoing his own models, and if those redos are completed they could find a place as Mk. 2 designs or whatever.

As for the OP: bear in mind that if you don't extract the ships from the latest version of BP2, you're getting nightmarish performance-killers with some really bad optimization problems. I think the best solution for now is just to extract those ships and get some help to walk you through the map/table problems.

Vexor (Solaris)

 :banghead:

The Solaris as it appeared in WiH is an original model by Esarai, NOT a steve-o creation. While the vexor was used as a placeholder early on, it has never been in any released versions of WiH. One would think you would know this.

In addition, both the Karuna and Narayana models found in the latest version of WiH have been redone by Esarai.

Sorry, I was in a bit of a hurry as I wrote my first post. I simply forgot about Solaris, TBH. :) The reality is a bit more complicated.

Torrent: The version now used in BP as Sanctus is only slightly altered from the normal version. Steve-O is reworking that model, last time I've heard from him, he was working on the turrets.

Tethis: First, it had most of it's small turrets removed and was adopted into BP as Narayana. Later, Esarai optimized it and gave it a new map. Steve-O didn't said anything about reworking it yet, but then, nobody asked him about it.

Hyperion: Ok, this one has quite a history. The very first version was included into original AoA release, already named Karuna. Then, Steve-O released a new version, which got adopted into AoA 3.6.10 and WiH. This one was used for a long time, undergoing tons of revisions and modifications. Like Narayana, it was also partially de-turreted. Recently, Esarai reworked the model once again, optimized it and gave it a new paint job. Independently, Steve-O started work on his own optimized Hyperion, which is currently WiP.

Vexor: This was the original Solaris. It didn't undergo many changes at first, but when Esarai joined, he showed us another, unrelated model which he was working on. At one point, it was decided that it will replace Solaris. The Vexor, which had some significant performance issues, was then dropped from WiH. Fast forward about a year (wow, it's been that long?), and Steve-O showcases the new revision of the Vexor (still WiP), beta of which is available to BP team for testing.

So, that's roughly the history of those ships in BP. Summing it up, if you want the original Steve-O's paintjob and armaments, you'd have to wait for the reworked versions. If you don't mind having BP-style textures, then you can use Esarai's versions of Tethis and Hyperion, you should get them from the latest version of WiH.

Unless Steve-O is actually reworking it on his side, the only reworking I know of is pecenipicek's. I might be wrong though.

I'm a bit out of touch with the story anyway, as I've been busy with WCS for a while. :)
It'd be a shame to leave such an awesome model unused, so I hope Darius will think something up for it.
And yes, Steve-O is reworking the Torrent. Pecenipicek was doing that specifically for BP, but Steve-O is working on his own version.

As for you Hades, it was a honest mistake, and I elaborated on it already. Stop being a jerk. I've done plenty of stuff for BP. Besides, if he knew the Vexor as a Steve-O's design, he'd know it as the Solaris, as it's original name is quite obscure.

A good rule of thumb is 'don't talk about things'

I'm going to be perfectly honest, that spoiled absolutely nothing for me. But BP business, not mine I guess. >_>

uhm... would you care to explain to me how exactly talking about a ship model's history has anything to do with story relation? as far as i could read, nothing, absolutely nothing, about the story or anything was mentioned. and i do fail to make a connection between the development of a ship model that can be used in any other mod and the BP story in general. so i am more than just a little confused and puzzled what provoked this sudden and hostile outburst.

That were my thoughts too. But it seems a genius like Battuta might still deduce something from it. Sorry Battuta, edited out the offending part. Let's talk about the models themselves for now.

Good to know. It seems that Steve-O didn't post his Torrent rework in the public forum for some reason. He told me about it's status via PM. His entire fleet seems to be getting a makeover. Turrets now use a single, large map for everything (making them a lot more consistent between ships than the old ones), hull textures are greatly optimized, turret count is optimized and their placement is improved. The entire ship looks much better than before, with the new intake texture, a lot of small details and more realistic baked lighting. And it's still more optimized than before. In short, it's going really well.
Now imagine it's all in a beta version. Once finished, this fleet pack is going to be real marvel. I don't know if he'll be doing the Tethis or not, but I think he might. It's a very good ship.

The issue is one Dragon will need to handle. We'll continue the discussion by PM if necessary. Please don't worry about it.

Did you find what you needed to regarding Steve-O's ships?

not really ^^;;

basecally... well here is what i want to do: i liked the Earth Federation ships in BP... a lot actually and ever since i found out how to make new fighters i downloaded flyable in other missions or campaigns for private use, i found a new joy in tweaking my game here and there. and i figured "well, if i can do that with fighters, why not cap ships?"

i downloaded the one or the other capship and by editing a few lines, replaced existing models like the Hecate for example with the ships i downloaded. i kinda want to do the same with the BP ships. extract them in working condition for me to use in other campaigns i downloaded. it would be kinda cool to model swap the terran capships in campaigns like Derelict or the vanilla FS2 campaign with them. you know, having the Orions and Hecates made Solaris, Naranya for a Deimos, Karuna and Sanctus for Aelos, Leviathan and Fenris cruisers... that kinda thing :-P

That's doable, though in some cases it'll be tricky, especially in any mission that explicitly alters a ship's loadout or subsystem names.

The best way to do it may be to select BP2 as a mod, then extract the retail missions, move them into /data/missions under Blue Planet 2, open up FRED, and swap the retail ships for UEF ships. Quick and comparatively easy.

well, mine was made with direct interaction and advice from a active BP team member, so if mine gets uv'd and textured, its sooner gonna be taken in that steve-o's anyhow.

Well, that's certain, the new Sanctus Steve-O's making could be used alongside yours, but not as a replacement, it's armament seems very different from the current Sanctus.
That's the case with all the reworks, BTW.
