I thought I wanted a QWERTY keyboard when I first when smart phone shopping. There are few on the market and they tend to suck. And turns out I actually like typing on the screen anyways.

ICS is niec. It wasn't as much "jizzed in my pants" as I had anticipated but still niec.

Edit: Wifi is SO much better now. With 2.3.6, I had to wait for around a minute until there was a proper connection going on, but now it's like click and BAM, wifi on.

I like the touchscreen keyboards, but I find that using a full qwerty keyboard, whether button or on-screen, requires much more attention than using T9 or similar on a dumbphone.  This is because on a dumbphone, you can put your thumb on the nubs on the number 5, and then you know (after learning) exactly where all the letters are, and if you are familiar with how the automatic word guessing on your phone has adjusted to you, you can type pretty fast without ever having to look at it, and only make a few minor corrections (if any) after you are finished.

I used to be able to drive while texting with no problem (before it was illegal) - never had to take my eyes off the road except after I was done, when I would take a few split second glances to be sure everything was typed correctly, then send.  Now that I've got a qwerty on-screen keyboard, I find it actually very dangerous to type, even if I type slowly and only take glances here and there.  Much more hand-eye coordination required.

Now, I usually try to use the voice dictation feature in the text window.  For the most part, that works ok.

This is exactly why I love keyboards such as Swype or SlideIT... they have the QWERTY layout we all know and (for the most part) love, but all you need to do is slide your finger from one area to the next... as long as you're in the vicinity of the letters that make up the word you're trying to type, chances are the keyboard will recognize it - especially with longer words.

I had that for a while on a Samsung Omnia II (SCH-i920) - Windows Mobile 6.5 ruined it.  It would eventually get slower and slower and then just lag to pieces.

Now I've got an iPhone:

I try not to anymore.  Voice dictation is pretty much hands-free, and hands-free is allowed.  Like I said, before, with T9, I was pretty much able to drive like normal, as I did not need to look at the phone.
