Hello. As you might have noticed, PCS2 evolved greatly while you were absent. There's a bunch of new campaigns released, some really awesome, some hilariously bad, as well as a few that are both at the same time. :) WCS is finally out, but MT and AG kicked the bucket.

Visually, it doesn't differ except in a few buttons and a new tab (it now has an insygnia editor, like in the first PCS).
However, there's a whole lot of new functionality added. It can do almost everything short of actual modeling (well, shield manipulation still has some limitations, but they're rarely a problem).

did you say shield editing?  so basically a lot of things on my wishlist got done when people who still had the drive to code [in their free time] took over?

Yes. Spicious seems to be in charge of it now. I don't remember all points on your wishlist, but it might as well be all done. Right now, there's exactly one feature I'd really like to see added, and that's it. I've thought about it after WCS got out, since it'd allow (among other things) for easy creation of a shield mesh that sticks closely to the hull, but the turrets stick out of it and the hangar isn't shielded (it'd work like shields in WC3 and 4). Alternatively, it'd allow for WCP-style component shielding. There's plenty of threads on the tools board you might like to read.

As for the roadmap, PCS2 went into completely different direction. You wanted to make it a multipurpose tool, extending far beyond POF editing. Instead, it's POF editing capabilities were improved. It can now do basic geometry manipulation (transformations), but it's not Blender (not yet, at least :)).

i was thinking of adding multipurpose features, but the core POF editing functionality was always #1.   i see that new file format support after DAE is getting refused.. you realize the entire purpose of the PMF internal format (serializing it to disk was a trivality) was to make adding new file formats easier, right? :D

I didn't follow that one too closely, as I'm mostly using PCS2 for POF manipulation. I'm not a converter for whom new formats actually matter, so you'll be better off discussing them with somebody else.

The FSU has also gotten a ton more models since you absence, such as a highpoly Hades, a new Medusa, a Hatshepsut, Typhon, Colossus, TWO Sathanas juggernauts (not opening pandora's box here with plurals, Mobius may be watching), several Shivan fighter and bombercraft, an Arcadia, and maybe a few more.

There's also shadows as well as many other cool graphical features added to the FSO, mostly thanks to Valithil.

i wanted to add some features but i had trouble getting it to compile. after 3 days of ****ing around with it, trying to resolve dependencies, etc, i gave up. would love to see projects for more common compilers (like vc10express/pro) that work.

first thing i wanted to do is a bitmap terrain generator. it would take a high resolution heightmaps and bitmaps, and generate a set of high resolution and completely detailboxed terrain.
the other thing i wanted to add was a subobject library. to make it easy to add turrets and other physical subsystems to a ship. place mount points and assign turrets from the library, and it would take care of orientations fvecs, uvecs,etc and gunpoints for you.

i don't remember what version i last had.. i've always had either student licenses or now MSDN licenses to all of microsoft's latest stuff.  i think last time i worked on it the project files were for vs2008 .. i hadn't gotten around to installing vs2010.
