[SOLVED] White background, can still see ships.
Basically, on certain missions instead of the space backdrop/skybox, it's just all white. Everything works normally (Can see HUD, full ship control, can see other ships and asteroids in distance in normal colors, weapons work, etc.) It's just that everything non-ship is white, and it's rather blinding.

So far, this happened to me for the first two playable segments of Bluplanet 1 (The opening cutscene and the chatter worked fine, it just is screwed up when I'm in control of the ship in what I'm assuming is subspace, and in the following mission)
Which was disappointing, because I had a feeling that it was a great mod when the music and fully-voiced cutscene kicked in  :sigh:

I've played through Derelict (voiced :)), Warzone, Transcend, and Homesick (came with T installer) since then without this problem.
But it cropped up again, quite a way into Wings of Dawn, (spoiler) in the cutscene and mission right after the Cordi queen rescue mission(s).(spoilers end)

I used Turey's installer, have the 3.6.12 MediaVPs, am using the Inferno 3.6.12 r/d, and am running this on Windows 7. It's Intel Core Duo 2.0 Ghz, 2.00 Gb RAM, and an integrated "intel family p965 chipset" (Basically no GPU)
I've tried checking the "fix color issues on certain ATI cards" box in the launcher, playing it windowed, making new pilots, updating drivers and none of it has worked.
I've also used the search bar, and I'm pretty sure that it's not the 'red-alert' bug, since A) The preceding missions in WoD to the screwed up mission is a bunch of 'red alert' missions strung together and B)I have control of my ship and HUD and can see everything perfectly fine, except that it's a white background/skybox and not the space/nearby planet/stars background/skybox.

Oh, right, when I use the debug executable, it crashes right before loading up the pilots, here's the log that comes up with the error message:

This is your problem in a nutshell. Specifically, this part:
Code: [Select]
  Max texture size: 2048x2048
If you have downloaded the "advanced" vps for Blue Planet, you should delete them, since they contain textures that are far greater than your "GPU" can handle.

Yep, your video card can't handle some high-res textures. Delete the advanced VPs.

Re: Background (where space should be) is all white in certain missions
Alright, thanks guys. What about the Wings of Dawn mission? Is there an easy way I can downsize/ fill in a placeholder for that?

Re: Background (where space should be) is all white in certain missions
So I downsized nebula_skybox.dds from 4096x2048 to 2048x1024. Should this still work? Is there a way I can just stick this into the .VP file, or do I have to extract everything and recompile with the 'fixed' file?

Make sure the texture file has the exact same name, and place it in [wings of dawn folder]/data/maps

Re: Background (where space should be) is all white in certain missions
How do I place it in the maps folder? I can't see an option for it (I'm using default VPview 32)

Extract the file from the vp, resize it, and store it in the folder.

Re: Background (where space should be) is all white in certain missions
He's already got the texture.

Shorebird: you don't need to place it into the VP at all. Files placed in Windows folder /[wings of dawn folder]/data/maps will override those in the VP. Just create that folder.

Re: Background (where space should be) is all white in certain missions
Thanks guys, for your quick help. Someone could probably remove the thread now since I take it problems caused by not having a legitimite GPU aren't too common  :p

I think we keep them so that if someone searches for this same problem, they can see the solution explained.

I'm relatively sure that people without real GPUs wouldn't be trying to play games on said laptop, but ok. :)

Re: [SOLVED] White background, can still see ships.
You'd be surprised. I myself ran FSO on my GMA 950 based laptop until 2 years ago or so.
