I wathed the game in pub,
there is like nothing like watching an important english match, in a packed english pub - The Atmosphere is great, and when Beckham scored that penalty it was hysterical.

Let me put it like this - Brazil Vs China on the TV.

Immediately after the national anthems, the England match was being talked about - not the 2 teams playing...not to mention numerous other mentions.  And then interviewing Shay Given (the Ireland keeper) at half time.  What was the first question?  "What do you think of England?"

Not a bloody show of respect for the guys own country, who are (more than) well in with a shout.  No respect either for other countries - look at Sweded.  It took less tahn 6 minutes pre-match for the Tv panel to dismiss Sweden as no-hopers, none of whom would get into the England team.

It's the sort of self centred pish that gets worse when you're close - obviously you've not been aware of the 6+ documentaries over the past week about how the Argentinian team are the scum of the earth and we should all hate them (more or less).

Not to mention the vitriol towards Germany given in the tabloids during the qualifiers and Euro 2000.

One final point - there was a little 'discussion' on the Lennox Lewis / Miike Tyson boxing match on the news....which culminated in (for some obscure reason) the Argentinain fottball team being called the most (for wont of a better word) evil and despicable team of the planet, and England being the saviours of all things sporting and fair.   And then the TV replays revealed that Owen did a clean air dive ch for the Argentines being the only cheaters, then..........

Dude, when the announcer says this three times in a row, I always laughed my ass off.

It's probably understandable why Argentines invest so much emotion into their soccer games. Considering that their economy and national finances have gone into the toliet as a result of their international loan default, the Argentines' only point of international pride left was the World Cup games. Now that England beat them again (first the Falkland War, now the World Cup), methinks of Argentines are going to be pissed off more than ever.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I was born in Argentina but I live in the States and just became an American citizen a year ago. Seeing Argentine antics since the early 1980s, I'm inclined to either shake my head in exasperation or laugh down my shirtsleeve at most anything that Argentina does. Thank God I live here in the USA. I got REALLY good digs here, much better than I would have back in Argentina.

I like Heavy Metal. It lets me bash people senseless/ get bashed senseless without the need for that pointless insulting thing. It's a hella relief.
 Just thought I'd mention that before I actually get to the point.
 The annoying thing about England is that we seem to be picking up a lot of the USA's less admirable traits- the style of television, the competitivness between companies and electorial campaigns are merely a few examples that don't even touch on the media.  
 The problem is however, that anybody who is too patriotic here is thought to be a racist (or a member of the British National Party... no... wait... it's the same thing. Bit like Santa and Satan ).
 Football is one of the few things left that people can take pride in and not be called racist, plus it's also the favorite sport in this country. That says it all really- the OTT media is merely trying to pander to the audience, and in the competetivness they try to out do each other.
 The exception to this is the BBC, they tend to maintain a unbiased view on things... well, the News does at any rate.
 Anyways, just a coupla thoughts.

I just watch football for the sake of the game and for the country.
Its great to walk around town after an England victory, and hearing
"ENGLAND! ENGLAND!" and stuff like that and seeing St. George Flags everywhere,
I just dont pay attention to the the rascism, media, and violence. It justs brings the game down.

aldo I know you've got a sore spot for the british media but give it up man  English fans (any fans for that matter) are going to automatically see their home country in the best light they can.

On RTE (english translation: radio television Ireland) they do comedy sketches of Des lynam with Gazza and Terry venebals. The general run of the sketch yesterday was "So Terry, David Beckham. Best striker in the world? Terry profusely agrees, then it moves on to "Terry, David Seaman. Best Goalkeeper in the world? Yet again Terry agrees wholeheartedly with Gazza nodding and putting on a mental accent all the time. The point is that it wouldn't be so funny if they didn't get on like that all the time.

The fact that the british media will totally screw the country over when it'll make a fast buck (or pound in this case) should tell you that you can't believe them at all.


On a more positive note I'm glad Ireland is doing so well, we are unlikely to win the tournament but the team never gives up without a fight
