I just got reclaimed(actually on July, i just realised today) that one of my many FS2 videos contain "audiovisual stuff" owned by THQ... what is going on here...
This is the video in question http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSAbbg8isII

probably just got confus since THQ owns :v:

but that's youtube for you, not much you can do about it other than stop using it.

edit: I suppose you could click that "I believe this copyright claim is not valid" button but I doubt it does anything.

yea one of my videos had a thorns song in it. youtube said it belonged to some german company when i know for certain that the rights were owned by satyr's little record label. though i wouldnt be supprised if the rights didnt get sold somewhere. black metallers usually keep the rights to themselves but snorre is kind of a flaky character it seems. he couldnt even help cover up a murder correctly. he did help invent the post 90s-modern black metal guitar sound though, with the help of the guy whos murder he tried to cover up.

I find it interesting sad that of all the FS related videos on Youtube (including full cutscenes) that this one was flagged and not others.

some douchebags called EMI publishing or something like that claimed they owned the video i recorded myself of a concert.  after i told youtube to **** off, they left the video up, but slapped it with those heinous pop up ads that i can't turn off, even though i told them to **** off again when they wanted to "monetize" my account.  still haven't heard back from the contact i sent them about that.

why are companies like this allowed to go around making outrageous ownership claims, apparently without having to back them up, and they just get away with it?  i'm guessing this company is getting a cut of the ad revenue on the video they have NO legitimate claim to, that i refused to even let be advertised on.  they don't own the song; the band's label is atlantic.  they sure as HELL don't own the video, since I ****ING RECORDED IT.

Vimeo FTW...

Youtube, to me, is the 'Facebook' of video sites. I deal with it because it's the most popular/most used. But's it's a crappy hell hole that I cringe to look at.

It may be because of the V on the cutscene, other than hat it does not make any sence, none of my new videos has many views, for example a have a old FS2 vid with over 35K views, is not flagged at all...

My first part of my Freespace Port Let's Play (nearly i wrote Freesport *g*) with the FS1 Intro was claimed by THQ, too. But i protest and THQ upheld it and deleted the claim.

THQ still does not have anything to do with Freespace.

Copyright law, ladies and gentleman.  It allows other people to make an easy profit off of your hard work  :P

Although this is the first time I have heard of this sort of thing happening, it does not surprise me in the least, given what I have already seen with Youtube and Copywrong laws.

Be very careful responding to this. The way youtube handles stuff like this is thusly:

X files a copyright claim
Y chooses to dispute the claim
X now has a set amount of time (two weeks I think?) to initiate legal action against Y

If X chooses not to, the video will be back up at some point.

If your video is monetized, you're out of luck then, because at this point, youtube will pretty much always ignore all further requests for intervention/mediation. It's like jumping through copyright hoops only to find that you still lose anyway.

i think if one of my videos got monetized id take it down out of shear principal, if that was an option for me. i mean i dont want people making money off of one of my demos and not giving me any, just because i used a song or textures from game in the background as those were not really the point of the video. that is more offensive to me than just taking it down. if some fraction of the video belonged to someone else and they made money from that, i should receive a cut for my portion of the work. to do otherwise is practically slavery.

if i feature a song or a game in a video its because i like that thing and i want to pimp what i like and maybe get others interested in those things as well. i like those things and want them to do well. they should maybe think of it as free advertising instead of an infringement on rights. its kinda gotten out of hand when tv shows frequently blur logos and products out of fear of getting a lawsuit (for example the mythbusters line of consumer products that you cant seem to get in stores). il start worrying when a video gets taken down, or worse hijack by money grubbers, because a coke can or a certain brand of computer hardware is visible in one of the shots.

Can't you remove the monetized vid, then reupload it under a slightly different name? I don't think anybody will quickly notice that sort of trickery.

i doubt it.  i haven't tried that exact situation, but i've tried renaming videos that got deleted the second they finished uploading.  no matter what i did, it was always removed instantly.

Honestly, it's a f---ing walkthrough... seriously??  I don't get it.  So, if you posted a text-based walkthrough on a Facebook FS2 page you had, would they demand part of the revenue from the banner ads or something?  This isn't a for profit deal, it's someone advertising your product for free, and that free advertisement is being hosted by another company for free, and you are turning around demanding money for it??? WTF, THQ, you suck.

It's not even their product.
THQ may own :v: but Interplay owns the FreeSpace franchise (unless they sold it to THQ, then I retract these statements).

So it's more like demanding money for someone else advertising someone else's product for free, hosted by another company for free.
If this flies maybe I could start putting up copyright notices for random videos **** year.

You could always tell interplay and see if they file suit against THQ and youtube. Doubt they would bother, but it would be neat.

Ummmmmm. I'm not certain this is incorrect.

THQ own Volition and Volition are the ones with the rights to FS2, not Interplay. Interplay just seem to have the rights to publish anything in the Freespace series (including FS3, etc). I don't think they own the assets or anything though.

Think of it like how a singer/songwriter still owns his song even if he can't simply re-release it under a different label.

yeah, well, most record labels are of the opinion artists DON'T own their songs.
