Studio Liverpool/Psygnosis closes after 28 years
Quote
One of the longest-lived game development houses in all of Europe, Studio Liverpool, was abruptly closed by parent company Sony this morning. All games in development at the studio have been cancelled, affecting what an unnamed source told Eurogamer includes a Wipeout game that had been in development for 12 to 18 months and a "Splinter Cell-style game," both planned as PS4 launch titles.

Wait. What?

Did I miss something about the PS4 existing?  And did I miss it a bloody freaking year ago?  And did I miss when they released the development kit?

Re: Studio Liverpool/Psygnosis closes after 28 years
Notice that the article says that Sony owns Studio Liverpool/Psygnosis so it is an internal development at this point, Dev kits might be available to a select number of devs with access to media grabbing IPs though to get a good starting line up ready.  Also you can almost guarantee that as soon as PS3 hit the shelves that preliminary preparations for a PS4 would have been well under way, also with all current Gen consoles are looking their age now and both Nintendo and MS having their own next gens entering final stages of development (am I right in thinking next 2 years?) that the PS4 will be in a similar state.

in response to the OP I hope the Wipeout IP isn't lost to the legal abyss, for me Splinter Cell has lost it's magic but mental paced 0g racing still has some play time for me.

Bump, BUMP, BUMP  :D

So I decided today to do a little digging around on the fate of my beloved Psygnosis these days some 9 months or so after Studio Liverpool got shut down. This may well be old news to some of you, but I've seen nothing on here. You may find these interesting reads:

http://www.prolificnorth.co.uk/2013/01/former-sony-games-developers-set-up-sawfly-studios-in-liverpool/

http://hexus.net/gaming/news/industry/50965-wipeout-game-designer-veterans-start-games-studios/

http://www.edge-online.com/features/how-sawfly-rose-from-the-ashes-of-studio-liverpool/

And here's something I found for anyone who wants to see what they used to do or simply reminisce before they got swallowed up and spat out by the big fish:

Use some of these IPs, morons! Or sell them off to someone who will! Colony Wars! Destruction Derby! G-Police! Of course, there's loads more than what's in the article, it's just one person reminiscing about some of their old favourites.
