 Me being the massive derp I am at Photoshop and GIMP when it comes to not making planets or textures, decided to look around for alternative software for drawing and came across Corel Painter, which costs way too much for me (350$!), a search for software like it led me to this free alternative: MyPaint
 
 Besides being awesome for the price of nothing, it comes with basilions of brushes that mimic things from pencils to paintbrushes and it works well even with a mouse, check it out!

I would post some work here but I should be asleep right now and can barely think what I am typing here. :\

My digital art set includes GIMP and Inkscape, but this looks like this might be a nice program to have. I may have to try it at some point.

The win32 version loads a damn sight faster than gimp.
Saves in ORA, PNG and JPEG
Seems to support layers with some nice feature

Ticks enough of the basic boxes for me to give a serious go

I actually spent months trying to hone my skills for both, it just felt very awk, this one is for drawing rather than making "digital pictures" like Photo-shop or GNU Image Manipulation Program, I still keep using them for things like textures, which they excel at.

And yes they did bite me rather badly at drawing!

Might resurrect my old HP convertible tablet one more time to play around with this. Poor thing overheats constantly, has no working trackpad and a couple non-functioning keys, and is otherwise damn near completely falling apart, but I can still baby it into running as a tablet.

You won't go far wrong with a little wacom bamboo. They're reasonably priced and good at what they do
