Occupy Wall Street is taking the gloves off

They're collecting donations to buy up consumer, mortgage and medical debt being offered on the market for pennies on the dollar. And then, instead of harassing the debtors and demanding full repayment, they're abolishing the debt. They get to put a spotlight on the secondary market of debt predators while simultaneously bailing people out. They're also considering expanding it to include private student loan debt (US government student loans have no secondary market so they can't be touched).

Mass protests all over the world? A powerful statement. But this? This might set the snowball rolling downhill on debt relief. And even if it doesn't? You still get to help people.

This is quite a great movement out of goodwill; I certainly hope it will stay that way.

Actually...

Perhaps now is a good time to contact one of your senators, representatives, etc., and see if they will be willing to donate a few thousand dollars toward the aims of philanthropy. After all, who doesn't like offering up the pitch as a social activist during election season?

be sure to inform them of the generous contributions by candidates of opposing political parties (whether or not said contributions actually took place).
