The Gefs have the right idea (act 3 spoilers)
Think about it. Leaving the system on comets is genius. Subspace doesn't work away from stars. The Shivans and Vishnans can't hunt you down out there. It's like the Sanctuary, except a hundred times safer. And from the events in Act 3 it's pretty obvious that a fair number of Gaian Effort supporters are peaceful civilian transhumanists. Hell, they developed Nagari capability without either the Shivans or the Vishnans pushing them along. That's important! Humans aren't supposed to have the ability, without assistance, to send via Nagari.

If Earth and the GTVA are exterminated by the Shivans, humanity will live on. The Gefs will survive.

Where does this come from? FS or BP source?

FS canon. FS2 tech description on subspace states:
Quote
First, an intrasystem jump can occur between two points in a star system. Most small, space-faring vessels are equipped with motivators capable of these short jumps. The presence of an intense gravitational field is required, prohibiting travel beyond the boundaries of a star system.

I don't know if Frak's picture is targeted at the OP or as a funny interpretation of Gef's intent, so I'll ignore it for the time being. Regarding the comet idea, it does seem desperate, although desperate times makes for desperate measures. You will be stranded in deep space forever without any possibility of subspace jumping back to whatever place you came from, and if you happen to be mistaken about the capabilities of the Shivan and the Vishnan, you will be in an even worse sitting duck position... although to be fair, it's quite the hiding place.

If they've got Nagari sensitives in the GEF population, could they be tracked that way?  Didn't Ken say something about it being a Shivan hunting sense?

But where will they get food and power from? Even in the Solar asteroid belt, sunlight helps meet those needs. You'd need fuel at the very least, and most of that can only be found near stars/remnants of them.

100% food and water recycling may be possible with draconian population and body reuse policies, but you can't recycle energy.

Re: The Gefs have the right idea (act 3 spoilers)
Have you ever heard of conservation of energy?

Suffice it to say that it is a fundamental principal of reality that you can.

I doubt the GEF's could cut energy emissions down to 0%, however I bet they could last long enough to float to some random star, refuel, then push off again.

Re: The Gefs have the right idea (act 3 spoilers)
Actually, I was sort of joking at the GEF situation, but in reality, I am pretty sick of the petty political stupidity of my country.  I really do wish I could get off this planet.  Mars anyone?

The issue is that the GEFs are extremists, and they have been living that way for multiple generations if I understand them correctly.  The problem with that type of society is that there is always an underclass of folks who are the non-believers and are shunned by the more rigid doctrinal folks.  Hence there is always someone who is unhappy with the situation.  It’s pretty much like a cult with constant social friction which will lead to a divided society.

As for heading off into the stars, why not a comet?  It has all the water you need, and if you can build hydroponic bays fed by solar or artificial energy, then you can have all of the food and energy you need provided that you planned it right. Hell, they built a jump gate inside the asteroid, they must have some kind of limitless fuel source to pull that off.

As far as hiding from the Shivans, as long as they aren’t radiating massive amounts of emissions I think they could go undetected for a long time.  The sky is a big place to hide and I’m sure the Shivans wouldn’t even be looking for them if they were far enough away from the solar system.

I have heard of entropy which says it's a fundamental principal of reality that the very act of conserving energy makes it useless. An imbalance of something is needed to power something with energy. But doing so will move the imbalance towards balance, and once balance is complete, you can't do anything with the energy anymore.

A lake in the mountains can power a wheel placed in the river going downhill to convert gravity into circular movement (and some heat from friction). But if all the water is at the same level, that doesn't work, because you'd need to spend all energy gained by this process into getting the water high enough to fall in the first place.

In other words, if you want to conserve energy 100% in useable forms, you will spend all the energy you have to do so. Nothing left over for luxurious things like being alive.

Life only works on earth because the sun keeps pumping energy into the planet. Remove that outside energy source, and life wouldn't exist because it uses too much energy to support itself.

They might be able to pack enough fuel to go hopping from star to star, yes. But then each time they're at a star, they'd tempt fate again to be found by the shivans. Still, better odds that squatting on a planet.

Comets still orbit a star though, even if it takes hundreds of years. . . . The Shivans'll still get the little space hippy gits.

Crashing large asteroids into the Terran homeworld? Rather inefficient, but the intent is admirable.

Oh wait, that's not what you meant, is it?

Yo, Dekker, it wouldn't hurt to think these things through. The GEF do not use comets, they're using Kuiper belt objects, most of which will never come very close to the sun.

Re: The Gefs have the right idea (act 3 spoilers)
To be fair, I did say comets in the OP, and 'comets' have been used in the fiction as a colloquialism for the Kuiper belt objects they're using...

Here's another thought: The Great Darkness: related in some strange way to the darkness between stars where subspace cannot reach?

Point stands, the Kuiper objects *still* orbit the sun, *even if it takes hundreds of years*
