Been long time since played FS2...and the aching tendrils of nostalgia beckon...

Okay, my nearly played-to-death FS2 discs survived another game install (for those mods requiring its presence). Now I'd like to get the media VPs. I had them on the OTHER computer but I can't get that oldie to boot up and I no longer have them anyway so I need to download fresh.

In RELEASE: 3.6.12 MediaVPs thread http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70736.0 I see it give the 2 download options. Strangely there is nothing between the OPTION 1 and the OR (OPTION 2 download separately being below it). Option 2 will be a pain in the arse...and I can't seem to find a link to the all-in-one download. I tried the java-based auto-installer but it proved unresponsive.

I'm sure its here somewhere and am just missing it. All a web search turns up is largely piratebay (will never go there...don't trust it).

PirateBay is awesome.  It's like the internet.  Tons of information, very useful, but requires user discretion and knowledge.

Oookay...will head there then for the all-in-one. Just wish found link here. The link I'd found also offers FS2 with it (though I don't need that). :(

EDIT: Hmm...as a justincase I tried the OTHER installer again. Found out why the java installer wasn't working. I put the game in a directory other than Games/Freespace etc...now to sit and wait for it to do its thing.

Le sigh...gonna be awhile since the internet is having an off day...got the best internet money can ask for (I live rural) in the form of MBB and so seem not-quite dialup slow one day and nearly DSL the next. Satnet would be more reliable but...well...can't do much online play with THAT! BTW...when I first found the SCP...downloading it back when I still had dialup...to describe it would break every rule in the RoC regarding proper language.... :P

PS: WHY do I see my IP in the lower right corner of post? That's not publicly visible is it? Other than to admins//mods whom are the ever omnipotent forum gods and their henchmen (respectively)...

Uh, jr2, this doesn't really answer the OP's question...

EAD_Agamemnon, the installer is currently broken, so Option 2 is the only way to install the MediaVPs at the moment. A new installer is in the works, but it won't be ready for a while.

About the IP address, no it's not publicly visible, just a reminder to you that it's recorded with each post you make. I don't know if even moderators can see it. I think only admins can.

Yeah, I can't see any one but my own, so I'd assume it's just admins.

I direct you to this tutorial to get you started on the best foot. The old installer is unreliable and will only give you broken installs. Until we get something new on that front, manual install is the way to go, and this tutorial is easy to follow.

Um...yeah I just realized about the broken installer. (I'm only viewing the rest of the posts AFTER the fact). Haven't been back to this topic since my last post. After letting the java installer do its thing overnight....most of the mods have FOLDERS but are empty and some won't even work right (of course). Those that don't give problems on launch still just take me to the Vanilla screen w/ no choice of changing campaign. Grrr...there goes the better part of 3.5gigs of my 20G monthly bandwidth.

<sigh>

Back to getting them one at a time. At least the installer did 1 thing for me...making a list of mod folders....

Someone should immediately sever the link to the Installer, strike any text on any page that refers to it and in bold, red big letters, outlining that the installer is completely fraked up, here's the page you should visit instead for your downloads.

Yes, why hasn't this been done yet? The references to the old installer are a continual thorn to new player efforts.

First of all, the installer is not "completely fraked up".  It works if you tell it to install everything.

Secondly, the links to the installer on the HLP site navigation bar have already been removed, and replaced with links to the installation threads.

Thirdly, the new version of the installer has moved from passive to active development.  I should have a beta version of the installer ready to test within a month.

That is very good news Goober. Looking forward to it.
