Hey...

just curious... you know in front of ships they have the 'prefix'... for example:  
GTD Orion
the 'GTD' stand for 'Galactic Terran Destroyer'... and likewise SF stands for 'Shivan Fighter', etc.

now exactly what are all of them... is there a site that defines all of the 'definitions'?

you'll notice that on those two subpages under 'information' (Freespace and Freespace 2 ship designations) i'm missing some of the information (i guessed on most of them, if not all; although a lot of them are just common sense)

could someone please look through them and check they're all correct?  I know about half a dozen aren't correct, (they have "?" where the definition should be) because i have no clue... for example, GTG and SJD, etc.

otherwise if there's a website or reference that defines them i'd accept that :nods:

Most (all?) of them are self-explanatory...  visit the techroom, pilot

From your list:

TC-TRI: terran cargo container (for GTFr Triton I think)
GTM: terran medical vessel
GTG: terran gas miner
GTA: terran AWACS
GTVA: you've got to be kidding
GTNB: terran nav buoy
GTVA: see above

GVG: vasudan gas miner
GVA: vasudan AWACS, aka Setekh

SJD: never used in game ("a sathanas, off in the distance")

Also note 'SSG' is used inconsistently -- both as a sentry gun (SSG Belial) and as a gas miner (SSG Rahu)

Someone isn't too attentive after being scared ****less by staring down a Shivan Juggernaut.  

The SJD Sathanas does get used in the second set of loop missions.  Volition used them instead of regular juggernauts because at 100+km away, you're probably not going to be able to tell the difference between a pyramid as big as a Uly and an actual, full-sized juggernaut.  They used the simple SJD model to make sure your framerate wouldn't drop through the floor.  Don't believe it?  Play the mission again and target one of the distant Sathanases and turn on the target rendering display.

Anyway, the prefix system is pretty well done.  You don't have to think about each individual ship class' armaments or purpose, so long as you remember roughly what each size classification is good for.  Only annoying bits are the GVFr Satis (should be GVT Satis, since it doesn't have a cargo dockpoint) and the GTVA Colossus (should be GTVJ Colossus, unless they were going for something gimpy like "Galactic Terran-Vasudan Annihilator").

I thought the SJD was used during the Capella part too... aside from the sun bitmap with the SJs, there were also scattered SJDs between you and the sun.

Also... GTVA would mean Galactic Terran-Vasudan AWACS... which is essentially all the Colossus is good for

Umm... not really.  The Colossus isn't THAT bad... it did take down a few destroyers and a Sathanas.  Also... the reason the Colossus has GTVA in-front of it is because it was never really named a "Juggernaut", it was a symbol of the GTVA(and a joint project), therefore... it is the GTVA Colossus.

Sadly it's you! :wink: While the model for the SJD is used in the game the prefix SJD doesn`t appear in the game.
 The topic was about what prefixes mean so therefore penguin's comment about SJD not being used in the game is perfectly correct.

Yes they were, they made the fuzzy red blips on the radar. One also departs in "Their Finest Hour" as the juggernaut arrives to blow the Colossus to kingdom come...

Only if you don't include target names... Otherwise there would be no support, i never heard GTS... nor would you have all the weapons, their prefixes aren't always mentioned...

Not quite certain what you`re trying to say here so I`ll explain what I meant in more detail.

The SJD prefix isn`t mentioned because there isn`t actually any such ship. The SJD sathanas is mearly a trick used by the game to keep the poly count low. As far as the plot line is concerned you`re seeing a SJ sathanas. Command doesn`t rename a ship class simply cause it's far away!

 The GTS Hygeia on the other hand is a real ship even if it isn`t actually mentioned by it's prefix at any point in the game.

I meant that GTS wasn't ever mentioned (except in ship names and loop-1-2), same with SJD

I could be mistaken, but isn't the SJD Sathanas used in the "Lion's Den" mission, as the juggernauts enter through Knossos 3?  It takes forever, but I think that if you target them (could be wrong, I haven't played that mission in a while) that those ships are given the SJD designation.

EDIT: It is in there, just looked at the mission file.

No, LODs would have taken care of that. The purpose of the SJD is to eliminate all the subsystems and turret AIs the game would otherwise have to track.
