Communcating with AI ships

 In the mission editor, is there a way I can receive messages from an AI ship. for example, Im creating a mission where I have to rescue a civilian ship can I program that particular ship to send out a distress call? I hope that makes sense?

Of course. Use the send-message SEXP.
