Game crash at startup
I have been trying to run with the 3.6.12 Inferno build and the 3.6.18, neither of the has started successfully.
I have posted my fs2_open.log below:

Re: Game crash at startup
Thanks for posting the fs2_open.log :)

You need to use either a custom BP build, or the BP compatibility package with a recent nightly build.  Neither 3.6.12 or 3.6.18 are supported with BP.

Given that you've got an Intel video card, I'd recommend using the BP compatibility package (stickied in this forum) and recent nightly (in the SCP nightly builds forum).  And, you also need to get the mediavps_3612 for BP to work.

Re: Game crash at startup
Correct, you cannot run the game using 3.6.12 or 3.6.18 as neither of them has the features required to handle BP. And as niffiwan said, since your hardware is below minimum spec for the standard BP build that came with the installation, you'll need to follow the steps below -

Grab both the compatibility packages from this thread http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83606.0

and a recent nightly build from here http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=173.0

edit: Also, there is a HUGE problem in that log:

There is no mod.ini in the Blue Planet folder, or you've done something to prevent it from reading correctly. You MUST have the 3.6.12 MediaVPs installed, in a folder called mediavps_3612, for Blue Planet to function. Can you verify that there is a mod.ini in the Blue Planet folder?

You should also turn the game up from 640x480 resolution and 16 bit color. It won't work too well there.

Re: Game crash at startup
Okay, I reinstalled BP, told my computer to use my dedicated graphics card and got the compatible and nightly builds.
It works, thanks for the help.

Re: Game crash at startup
I've also had an error show when i tried to load BP2 (directly or via another mod), but i get this error:

Code: [Select]
sounds.tbl(line 629):
Error: Missing required token: [#Flyby Sounds End]. Found [$UEF: 0 T_flyby1.wav, 0, 0.75, 1, 200, 400 ]  instead.

kernel32.dll! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes
fred2_open_3_6_18.exe! <no symbol>
fred2_open_3_6_18.exe! <no symbol>

when i checked the file, the tags where set up correctly as they should, but it still throws the error. I tried removing the 'UEF' flybys, but the game complains of missing sounds.
Is to do with not having BP1 in? if it does, i need a link to it, due to the open installer cannot find a mirror to download it from.

Help would be grateful, due the fact i would like to see how the turret controller script works  ;)

BP1 is here. Big fat sticky on top of board, can't miss it.

Can't run BP2 without BP1, simple as that. Forget the old installer, it's non-functional.

Re: Game crash at startup
Replying here so that I do not create another thread about crashing. Used the .18 build, it crashed looked up fixes saw that I needed nightly builds, crashed again saw that I needed compatibility and it crashed again. This is the error that I keep on getting now. Each time I find a fix I go farther into the mod though! It happens right after they go into the portal!

Re: Game crash at startup
That's ... strange.

It also means that you do not have the MediaVPs installed correctly. Please use this information to generate a debug log that you should then post here. This'll tell us what's going wrong.

Re: Game crash at startup
Thank you for the reply, trying to follow that guide and I am using the wxlauncher as it is the only one that works with windows8. Trying to get to the advanced settings tab and it stats that FreeSpace 2 Open did not generate a flag file. I saw that using the basic settings tab and then using the Debug SSE and then playing the mod until I get the error was the way to create the log file, but it did not sadly. Is this because of the "did not generate a flag file" problem?

The error afterwords also seems to be different now too.  I do not know if this helps or not.

Re: Game crash at startup
Please look for the log file in <FreeSpace 2 directory>\data\ and post it here.

Re: Game crash at startup
I did the directions posted above, but to no avail. The file is not in my data folder :( Is it because of that one issue? with the advanced settings?

Re: Game crash at startup
No. Since the debug build did run, the log file has been generated. There are instructions on how to find it in the post I linked to earlier.

In any case, the error message tells me that you do not have the mediavps installed correctly. Please follow the mediavps install instructions.

Fixed it by redownloading all the vp's; thank you for your help!. Although the debugg file still will not show up for me sadly.

From the post that The E linked to earlier:

Quote
*NOTE FOR PEOPLE USING WINDOWS VISTA OR 7:
If you installed FS2 to C:\Program Files\ (or C:\Program Files (x86)\ on 64-bit versions of Windows), the log file will not be in FS2\data\, but rather in a "virtualized" folder. This can be found by either going to the data folder, and clicking on the "Compatibility Files" button in the Explorer window, or by manually navigating to C:\Users\<Your Username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\<Rest of the path to your FS2 directory>\data

**NOTE FOR PEOPLE USING MAC OS X LION:
The library folder is hidden in the Finder for some excellent reason. Please see information here on how to access the folder.

This quote almost certainly explains why you never saw a debug log.
