Microsoft apparently has a problem at their hands; with dismal sales of Windows 8, they have started a rather rapid redevelopment of Windows Blue (=8.1). So far what I have seen Windows 8 has fared worse than Vista, so there is sort of incentive towards that.
Two of the most frequently required modifications are return of Start button, and boot directly to the Desktop mode. Never underestimate the resistance towards change from your major customers.

This summarizes my sentiment pretty perfectly.
Although, I'm not sure how many companies and customers Microsoft already alienated with this, hardware vendors did not take Surface lightly either. It's probably gonna be Linux for me after Windows 7 isn't supported anymore.
