Questions from a computer dummy
I'd like to start out by saying that the blue planet mod is in my top 5 games of all time list. That being said I'd love to be able to actually play it again. As it stands I've tried installing the mod a few times and I've run into different crashes and errors every time. This attempt has brought me farther than the rest. Seems AoA and WIH part 1 work (ran through the first mission of each) But WiH part 2 crashes on the load screen before the first level. I end up with this error message and something about a debugger which just shortens the list of jibberish it gives me.

For the life of me I have no clue what that means. I am using the BPcompleteinstaller from the launch thread and the BP compatibility stuff from that thread(I think I did that right). I'm a serious computer moron. Help me community you are my only hope. Where have I gone wrong?

apologies if this is the wrong section or the wrong forum.

Please run a debug build, then post your fs2_open.log file.

Re: Questions from a computer dummy
Really showing my incompetence here. I know how to run the debug build but no clue where to find the log file.

Re: Questions from a computer dummy
All right, step 1, try creating a new pilot file.

Re: Questions from a computer dummy
Ok just went through that same issue. One thing I noticed when I start the game the cutscene starts part of the way through instead of the beginning. Not sure if that means anything but who knows.

I think that its a bit bad editing on the part of the cutscene maker as it seems as though the opening cutscene is edited from FS2 somewhere, so it appears as though the cutscene starts abruptly and "in the middle" (you can hear what seems to be a previous dialogue)

Re: Questions from a computer dummy
So figuring I had nothing to lose I decided to start over from scratch and see if I had simply botched the installs. Started from a fresh install and followed the instructions from the WiH release thread using the full installer. Started it up and got the antipodes has stopped working crash. Moved from there to the compatibility build from the BP compatability pack thread. Now I get to the same place I was at on the first install. I make it as far as the load screen starting the WiH 2 campaign. The message on crash this time around is not the same one I got on my first install but I'm not sure if that is really relevant.

Passed filename, 'ÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌ', is too long to support an extension!!

Maximum length, minus the extension, is 27 characters.

Also of note I am now getting the crash at the start of the load screen instead of the end of the load screen.
I attempted to start the campaign 3 times with 3 different pilot files and end up crashing at the same time.
I can only assume I'm botching something with my installs and hopefully you guys that can understand that log file can tell me what.

Re: Questions from a computer dummy
I'm not sure exactly what this is, though I feel like we've seen it before. Try backing up your entire pilots directory to somewhere safe, then deleting everything in it and creating a new pilot.

Re: Questions from a computer dummy
only pilot file in there is the one I made that produced this error. Hasn't done any other mods or had any other campaigns loaded. I'll just wipe everything in there out and try again anyway.

EDIT: Crash in the same place error message looks the same. Want a log for this too or is that not going to help anything?

Re: Questions from a computer dummy
try using a nightly build from a few days ago, the most recent one might have a problem.

Re: Questions from a computer dummy
Tried that and it brought me back to the error that started this thread. Same place as the new error just a different error message.  Steele must be jumping around blocking my attempts at playing part 3.

Re: Questions from a computer dummy
doh!  I think I've seen that original error once before, reported as occurring in Sunglare & Icarus only.  I don't think we found a solution last time, I couldn't reproduce the error.  You might be able to play the Act3 missions from the Techroom -> Campaign Missions by pressing CTRL-ALT-S to reveal all the missions.

EDIT: or someone could provide you with a modified campaign file that starts after Icarus, either way it's a shame because Icarus is a rocking cutscene... maybe watch it on Youtube?

Re: Questions from a computer dummy
well tried that Control-Alt-S thing to reveal the missions in the techroom and got nothing. Checked with BP 1 loaded and only got the same thing. Only thing that comes up under campaign missions is blue planet -  war in heaven 2       bp2.p2.fc2

When switching to the campaign missions section I got a short load screen of some sort (I think it was too fast to read) that was only up for a second or less. Happens every time I switch to that tab.

If anyone has a pilot file that is after icarus for me to test out I can. Just have to tell me how to get it to work in my BP I've never done anything with pilot files other than delete them.

Re: Questions from a computer dummy
Sorry!!!  Try CTRL-SHIFT-S instead from Campaign missions (not ALT :nervous:)

Re: Questions from a computer dummy
Code: [Select]
OpenGL Vendor    : Intel
OpenGL Renderer  : Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000
OpenGL Version   : 3.3.0 - Build 8.15.10.2653

With that graphics card, you probably don't want to be using the advanced-graphics packs. Try deleting "Freespace 2\blueplanet\adv-bp.vp" and "Freespace 2\blueplanet2\adv-bp2.vp". It may or may not solve the bug you're having, but it will definitely improve your game speed.

Re: Questions from a computer dummy
That is odd I have a GT650M in this laptop. Why would it be detecting the onboard instead of that card?
