Help me getting rid of those disturbing, random pop-ups
I must have fallen into one of those internet traps where clicking on a particular link by mistake results in ads popping up whenever I browse the internet. I'm now getting strange things such as the word "Poker" in the nickname of a forumite on another site be marked as a link to a site dedicated to the game of poker. EDIT: it's happening here as well.

How can I get rid of those pop-ups and weird ads?

that... that sounds like malware
The good Christian should beware of mathematicians, and all those who make empty prophecies. The danger already exists that the mathematicians have made a covenant with the devil to darken the spirit and to confine man in the bonds of Hell.

Have you run your antimalware package? Cos that's the first thing to do, seeing as how you've been hit by one.

Also consider using other antimalware packages to find this if the first one can't identify it. Also, clear your browser cache, just as a precaution.

And then start using Linux to prevent it from happening again :P

(just kidding, if it's a malicious browser plugin it'll work cross-platform)

First things first, try your anti-malware program and see what it catches. Also a good idea to check out your plugins and extensions on whatever browser you're using (chrome://plugins, chrome://extensions at least on chrome, IE and Firefox I can't remember off the top of my head) and see if anything looks out of place.

How so?

I've found it pretty damned fast and easy to use.

Re: Help me getting rid of those disturbing, random pop-ups
When I visit a site, I want to visit it and be done with it quickly. Having NoScript would mean most of it is broken, requiring me to check what scripts need to be allowed for site to work as it should. Worst cases are those where site seems to work fine on the outside, but it isn't, making me blame crappy web design when this is not the case.

Adblock Plus and Ghostery are enough for me. I don't need site crippling addons and I still don't get any malware. When I'm not sure a site is relatively safe to visit, I use linux virtual machine.

It usually only takes about five seconds to allow scripts, when it's necessary.  And you can permanently enable specific scripts on specific sites.

I think I've only encountered a few sites where it took longer than half a minute (and in those cases, it was just finding the one script that needed to be enabled in a sea of advertising and tracking scripts).

But I digress.

I tend to skip visiting sites that take longer to load than 10 seconds. Having to mess with a stupid addon that increases the time is beyond ridiculous. Adblock takes care of ads. Ghostery takes care of data miners. That's all I need and I have no problems with browser security.

Or you could try to see if it's a browser plugin that's you can disable and delete.  Worked for me when that same thing was going on.  A reformat is really extreme.  I've manually deleted multiple viruses before, and yours sounds like just a malware plugin.

One virus that hit my parent's computer was really bad.  It disallowed any access to any system controls, except the program manager -- though you could not end the process -- resisted any attempt to delete it, and wouldn't even let you get onto the internet without telling you that your computer was "in danger".

I started that sucker in up in safe mode, which disabled the use of the virus's registry entries, then I looked up the exe name in MSconfig, used the search function to find the exe, and renamed it to keep if from opening. Searched through the registry for the filename and edited out all instances where the filename was included, and restarted the computer.  The computer worked a little slower and weirder, probably because of registry entries that were edited by the virus to add loopholes and crap, but my parents were able to get all their data easily, and probably could have used it if they had been willing to put up with a little extra slowness.

All this to say that you probably don't have to reformat.

I've never even heard of Ghostery, and I have no browser issues, ever.

Jeez, Mobius. What kind of crazy Italian websites are you browsing? ;7
Fun while it lasted.

Re: Help me getting rid of those disturbing, random pop-ups
Ghostery is not about security, but privacy. It stops websites from tracking your activity. As a side effect, it can also speed up page loading times considerably when web pages no longer have to wait for 3rd party scripts to load. It also does not tend to break websites, I've had it block everything and websites have been working just fine.

People should note that Adblock Plus also has Malware Domains subscription to protect against known malware distributing domains. It works alongside of whatever built-in service your browser uses.

Re: Help me getting rid of those disturbing, random pop-ups
i got something that sounds similar, where i was getting in-text ads (that thing where random words on the page become links/popup ads when you hover on them) on every website.  malware/virus scanners never found anything, but after googling a bit i eventually found out something had managed to change my browser settings to do this.  IIRC it was by setting a proxy that apparently injected ads before delivering the page to me.  so before you go off nuking everything, just try a simple browser refresh.  i didn't even have to reinstall firefox, just clear the relevant setting.

as for ghostery, i use it also, but i've also noticed as of late it's starting to break sites.  when this happens the site in question usually has close to 20 trackers active.  methinks some of the commercial ad spamming/data mining sites for profit are starting to figure out how to deliberately break when you use blocker stuff.  it's a LOT easier to manage than noscript though.  i uninstalled that after about 3 pages.  ghostery works fine and doesn't break sites most of the time, so it's worth keeping and just turning off/whitelisting sites when needed.  or if you feel like spending a few minutes to figure out which exact tracker is causing it you can globally enable that one and still get rid of the rest of the annoying little fkers.  (protip: i've NEVER found any google tracker to be the one responsible.  or any other recognizable name for that matter.  if you've heard of it, you can probably permablock it with no problems.)

Hitman Pro is a very good program to get rid of malware, although it has a limited trail period.
