Apparently the guys down at The Center for Investigative Reporting are complete nerds. So when U.S. Customs and Border Protection gave them the figures for pot busts, they decided to go a bit silly with it.

I remember reading ages ago that one of the big tobacco companies actually had a patent on marijuana cigarettes.  If it ever became legal they were in a position to make a fortune.   If that hasn't expired then I can see the lawsuits now for every joint you get caught smoking. 

Seriously though I could see people breeding certain strains and trying to patent those and products made from them.  Really wouldn't be much different then big tobacco products.
